Don You're a moron no one in their right mind is going to pay $400 or $500 for a cell phone to just to have portable games.
Nintendo announced this morning (Feb. 22, 2012) that its 3DS has gone on to sell more
than 5 million units in Japan — likely thanks to key holiday releases,
the system’s price-cut, and other factors building momentum for the
portable.

It’s now selling at a faster rate than the original DS, Game Boy
Advance, and Wii. In the U.S., the system has moved over 4.25 million
units as of last month.

So, you were saying something about an iPhone 5?

The writer of this article is either trolling or has no idea what actually motivates the gaming industry.

iPhone games do not consistently create an enjoyable, fully-formed experience. Games that attempt to create touchscreen traditional controls will never approximate the pleasure and ease of having real buttons to use. Instead, you get crappy little short form novelty games. Games that are impressive compared to feature phone games, and come close to providing a console-like experience, but are permanently and irreparably hampered by the fact that they're trying to create an experience wholly unsuited to the format.

The 3DS was extremely overpriced, and the market understood that and simply refused to buy the 3DS because of it. Nintendo was overconfident, and has since corrected the price. If you look at the historical adoption rates, the 3DS sales are just fine. You'll see the 3DS around for a long time.

But I suppose any tech article these days needs to feed into the narrative that the iWhatever is constantly changing everything, right?

Apple doesn't like a control pad attachment for iPhone. On top of that, there are only clones, but not real games like uncharted or CoD on iOS or android. And the clones lack depth. You spend most of the time fidgeting with the touch screen to do actions. The cutscenes are underwhelming: story lines are pathetic.

Is it ironic that i one game i play heavily on my mobile nowadays is metal gear solid through a PS1 emulator? It beats every other game IMO. The good story line, longer game play and over all nice experience.

I really hope there are good titles for PS Vita scheduled to release. If so i might just keep my old mobile as it does all the browsing, email, phone functions etc fine and i would finally be able to play a great game while being portable.

I would say that the Nintendo 3DS will kill the iPhone 5.

Because the Nintendo 3DS has downloadable 3D Music videos from today's American music artist which I have already downloaded the 3 free 3D Music Videos to watch anywhere and the 3DS has 3D "Blue Man Group" video and cheap downloadable 3D Apps & 3D games costing from 99 cents to $5.99 and the Nintendo 3DS also has FREE downloadable 3D Apps & 3D Games, which I have already downloaded 3 Free 3D Apps and I have downloaded 2 Free 3D Games and the 3DS has a 3D Camera and I have already used the 3DS 3D Camera to take 3D photos & 3D Videos and I have uploaded some of my 3D footage online using the Nintendo 3DS's Web Browser to upload my 3D footage online and I have used my 3DS Web Browser to also download other peoples 3D footage from the Internet on my 3DS Web Browser and I have view all sorts of 3D content on 3D Websites online on my 3DS's Web Browser and I have use my 3DS 3D Camera to play 3D Augmented Reality games as well and it's all in 3D without the Glasses using the 3DS 3D Camera and I have beautiful 3D HD graphics that equal to that of a 3D HD version of Wii Graphics and I have Streamed 3D Videos Online on my 3DS in the eShop and I have also Watch 3D Trailers for upcoming 3D movies coming to Theaters in 3D and I have done all of this in 3D Without the Glasses. So you can pay $169 for a Nintendo 3DS and buy the greatest Games ever & all in 3D Without the Glasses like Cave Story 3D and Kid Icarus and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 using the MOTION SENSORS to play the game like if you were turning a real wheel to turn the Kart left & right and also play such other 8 GB 3D Games like TheatRhytem Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts 3D and Crush 3D and Shinobi and Animal Crossing and Rodea the Sky Soldier and Michael Jackson: the Experience 3D and Ridge Racer 3D and Super Street Fighter 4 3D and Star Fox 3D and Zelda 3D and Sonic Generations 3D and Tetris 3D and Tekken 3D which also has the 3D Movie Tekken the Movie 3D in it to watch and also play other 8 GB 3D HD games as Spider Man 3D and 100% of the 3DS games are in HD 3D Without the Glasses. And they're making Angry Birds 3D as a downloadable game. And the 3DS has DLC (Downloadable Content) like Xbox Live for a bunch of 3DS games to add content to the game cartridge later on. And 1 of the Free 3D Apps I have downloaded was Netflix. And Netflix is getting 3D Movies in the next few months, so for $169 you can watch 3D movies on the free Netflix App on the 3DS in 3D Without the Glasses.

Ahah so many comments! I think the title is a little sketchy, as they are really two different platforms and the iPhone 5 will not kill Nintendo. Perhaps what the message is that iPhone 5 is in high, high demand so come Christmas more money will be heading Apples way in contrast to what Nintendo used to profit some years ago (if the new iPhone is available by then of course). Gaming is not Apples selling point, but for most consumers light, digestible and cheap gaming will sell out over serious 3D titles in terms of finance not quality. To the articles merit, I agree in that new smartphone/tablet markets are leaving less money for Nintendo but there is no need to announce a funeral just yet. Over the next decade though, Nintendo may have to look into other income revenues to really beef up its profits. Offering the classic N64 titles and Gameboy games to Android and iOS users for a premium price (say $30-50 each) could generate millions. I'm sure many people would pay for childhood gems like those for their phones (instead of pirating emulators for free). Newer games definitely need a physical console and there will always be a market for this, so the article is definitely wrong in that aspect.

Yes, I think the Vita will give the 3DS some competition, but, if you remember the war of opinions between the DS and PSP, they were about the same. The PSP will out sell the DS. But in the end, the DS and DSi have over 125 million and the PSP only 70 million. The 3DS has sold over 4 million so far and is catching up with the DS's first year. But, if you remember, the DS launched in November, right before Christmas. I would expect sales to increase around the holidays. Add to it the games coming out, I think the sales will rebound. Will they hit the DS mark, I doubt it. The DS tapped into uncharted market shares. We don't know how this new audience will feel about new consoles. Will they buy what is new just to get it? The same goes for the Wii U. There is such a diverse range of gamers there that are new. My father and mother in law have a Wii. I doubt they will upgrade to the Wii U just because it is there. That is the point I am making. The sales will undoubtedly be lower than the Wii and DS. As far as the Vita killing the 3DS, I doubt it. That is the same debate from 5 years ago, is teh PSP or DS better? With an install base of over 4 million, I doubt the 3DS will go anywhere soon.

The Nintendo 3DS has downloadable 3D Music videos from today's American music artist which I have already downloaded the 3 free 3D Music Videos to watch anywhere and the 3DS has 3D "Blue Man Group" video which I also downloaded for free and 3D "College Humor" videos and cheap downloadable 3D Apps & 3D games costing from 99 cents to $5.99 and the Nintendo 3DS also has FREE downloadable 3D Apps & 3D Games, which I have already downloaded 3 Free 3D Apps and I have also downloaded 2 Free 3D Games and the 3DS has a 3D Camera and I have already used the 3DS 3D Camera to take 3D Pictures & 3D Videos and I have uploaded some of my 3D footage online using the Nintendo 3DS's Web Browser to upload my 3D footage online and I have used my 3DS Web Browser to also download other peoples 3D footage from the Internet on my 3DS Web Browser and I have view all sorts of 3D content on 3D Websites online on my 3DS's Web Browser and I have use my 3DS 3D Camera to play 3D Augmented Reality games and Nintendo makes the Best Augmented Reality games as well and it's all in 3D without the Glasses using the 3DS 3D Camera and I have the Nintendo 3DS cartridge games are 2 to 8 GB each and they have beautiful 3D HD graphics that equal to that of a 3D HD version of Wii Graphics and I have Streamed 3D Videos Online on my 3DS and watch 3D video Trailers of current & upcoming 3D Games and I have Watch 3D Trailers for upcoming 3D movies coming to Theaters in 3D and I have done all of this in 3D Without the Glasses.

So you can either pay $500 for an iPhone 5 which is just like the iPhone 4 and cost $80 a Month for services OR you can pay $169 for a Nintendo 3DS and buy the greatest Games ever & all in 3D Without the Glasses like Cave Story 3D and Kid Icarus and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 using the MOTION SENSORS to play the game like if you where turning a real wheel to turn the Kart left & right and also play such other 8 GB 3D Games like TheatRhytem Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts 3D and Luigi's Mansion and Resident Evil: Revelations and Metal Gear Solid 3D and Crush 3D and Shinobi and Animal Crossing and Rodea the Sky Soldier and Michael Jackson the Experience 3D and Ridge Racer 3D and Super Street Fighter 4 3D and Star Fox 3D and Zelda 3D and Sonic Generations 3D and Tetris 3D and Tekken 3D which also has the 3D Movie in it to watch and also play other 8 GB 3D games as Spider Man 3D and all 100% of the 3DS are in 3D Without the Glasses.

And they're making Angry Birds 3D as a Downloadable game.

So I'll stick to my Nintendo 3DS for $169, instead of the Crappy same old iPhone that's $500 with a Contract thats has you pays an additional $80 a month on top of that.

I get your point, and just to point out, I've been a hardcore gamer since the N64, I was just mentioning my newest console. I should've been more clear. I agree, this article is clearly bias, but there is a small hint of truth in it. Not every hardcore gamer is looking for these huge, jaw dropping experiences on the go. a "hardcore portable gamer" would never even consider an iPhone as a console, I agree. But a "hardcore console gamer" who used to buy handhelds to have something to do on the go? Maybe, and in my case, yes. The iPhone 5 won't kill the 3DS, but I can see it stealing a minority of gamers who feel the same way I do. It won't be anymore than 10% (2-3% is even more likely), but with the current state of the 3DS as far as title offerings and sales, that percent could end up making a bad situation worse. And of course, the PS Vita will most likely be the last nail in the coffin.....

If you are carrying one device around, what is it? Is it your iPhone or your Droid B4? The one thing that I just cannot comprehend today is, what do you all base your ideas off of? You have been a hardcore gamer since 2006 when you bought a Xbox 360. I had an Atari 2600 in 1984 as a young child. I moved to the Nintendo(NES) and then to the SNES. I had hundreds of games for both. In the 3D generation, I had a Playstation, a N64 and a Sega Saturn. In the next generation, I had a GameCube and a Xbox. In the hand held market, I had a Gameboy Advance and moved to the DS, then DSlite, then DSi and now the 3DS. I actually owned a Virtual Boy, but unfortunately my friend borrowed it and never returned it. Now I have a Wii, an Xbox 306. I have had thousands of games for all of these systems over the years. Would that not constitute being a "hard core" gamer?
I have seen the games on the iOS and other smart devices. Of those games, the only "hard core" games I have seen are ports of console games. You mentioned Final Fantasy Tactics, well, that came from the PS1. It was also ported to the PSP as War of the Lions. They released it on PS1Classics as well. Then you have Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and A2 on the DS system.
I can tell you, of my DS titles,
I have put hundreds of hours into them. Phantasy Star 0 has a character that I have put over 120 hours into. Final Fantasy III has racked up nearly 80. Final Fantasy IV has racked up over 90.
I have a iOS device, newest iPod Touch. It is used primarily for MS OneNote with a Bluetooth keyboard. We stream NetFlix and it is used as a MP3 player. Of the hundreds of games I have seen in the app store. Most games I would want to play are listed above. I found a hand full of games that I think are worth buying. Of the thousands of free apps, all are latent with ad banners. I have seen hundreds of apps for game guides. Hundreds of apps on how to play a game, really?
This article is completely biased. This is mere speculation on the authors part.

While it's CONVENIENT to have games on mobile, it's also a very limiting, nearly patronizing gaming experience. That's not to say iPhone users who do indulge in minimal gaming aren't intelligent, it's just that most any new iOS gamers to be gained were never serious gamers in the first place and you would not see 3DS users fleeing in droves to iOS, especially with the Sony Vita on the horizon. In terms of battery life, while the Vita is proposed to suck at it, the iPhone 4 still isn't spectacularly long-lasting while gaming. Until the iPhone starts baking cookies and performing surgeries, it's "just" a cool feature+smartphone. I do own the iPhone 4 and am looking forward to the iPhone 5 and iCloud for enterprise synchronization reasons for my small business ventures, but nothing could alter my preference for console or PC gaming, not even "magic."

Whoa, these comments hold some serious backlash. Have u guys even looked at the IOS game market? It's not all Angry Birds and Tiny Wings. There are some really good hardcore games that work really well touch screen. Infinity Blade, Space Invaders infinity gene (the best evolution of a classic game I can recall since Super Mario 64), Final Fantasy Tactics, Zenonia, etc. No the iPhone can never compete with home consoles (I am a hardcore gamer and have had a 360 since 06) but it can easily take the place of portables for some hardcore gamers. I don't need ANOTHER dedicated device to carry around. With my iPhone (and my droid b4 that) I can get a decent gaming fix on the go, and that's all I need. It also replaces my mp3 player. One device in my pocket when I used to carry 3. No I didnt buy my iPhone for games. But after I got one I found I never picked up my DS or PSP nearly as often. Just saying, this article has a bit of merit.

That's because you want the 3DS to survive at all costs, since you have one obviously you don't want to look retarded. And by following all my posts certainly makes me important in your mind.
