NOT an Apple Fanboy (nor Samsung) but totally appalled by the fact he pretty much flicked the GSIII away from himself every time but the iPhone 5 totally got a legitimate “slip” or “drop” in each test. I don’t really think these videos are front-page worthy Slashgear. I’d love to see the real stress tests done by the engineering departments for both companies. Those are WAY more interesting if you ever see them.

Why do we all insist on thin easily destroyed phones only to put a bulky case on them. Rather have a phone made of tough impact resistant plastic or rubber material that doesn’t need a case. Such as the old school hand radios just slimmed down around the smaller electronics. Aluminum is actually inferior to plastic, it doesn’t absorb shock and dents on impact. Unfortunately the plastic used for these phones today is not of the highest grade, so the iPhone probably is slightly tougher. We need to insist on more durable devices and accept a few mm more in thickness. Apple, Samsung, and all these other device makers are laughing all the way to the bank every time we drop one and have to replace it.

Bear in mind, though, that, in the US and the UK, such phones are relatively much cheaper with contracts – contracts which allow for upgrades, super-easy replacements, etc. There’s a lot less drive to look after them compared to those who pay full price.

Those drop tests have always been for shit n’ giggles, taking them seriously (specially when both phones don’t fall on the same side) is stupid. There’s another drop test where they “check” when both phones fall on their screen and surprise! Both suffer similar damage! Falling on a corner will break the screen on both phones… so don’t be stupid and get a case! Anything can break and it won’t matter if it’s an Android, iPhone or whataver!

I think Gizmodo did a drop test with the iPhone 4S vs GSIII and the “Glass Sandwich” won that test too. The Sammy suffered way more damage. It was mentioned that Samsung went with a thinner “Gorilla Glass II” and the iPhone had the thicker 1st gen Gorilla Glass.
Regardless of what you may think of the OS’s. Samsung hardware is cheap, fragile, and ugly. Even if you prefer Android, phones like the Motorola Razr and HTC One X show some actual pride of craftsmanship and design unlike the Samsung plastic embarrasments.

Weird. In a single drop test by a case manufacturer i saw on engadget the other day, he dropped it from about head hi on flat pavement, the phone hit on the corner and the display was cracked all across, worse than the SGS III above. Cobblestone indeed is very random surface, whether the phone hits a protruding corner or not can make a substantial difference, especially when the phone hits by its corner. Not taking sides here, there are just so many possible outcomes thanks to physics. The devices are probably even using the same glass.
Thus, judging the build quality on such a random test is outright silly.

The iPhone 5 is light and has an aluminium back cover. It should not come as a surprise that it does good in the drop tests. The new cover and the increased screen is the most positive elements of the new design.
