Is it so far of to expect them not to match their competitors when their current resolution is 960×640 on phones? Also all HD is in16:9, high time they followed some existing standards instead of dictating their own

You must be a liar to say that you owned an iPad. I had 3 iPads so far (iPad, iPad 2 and New iPad) and they never once crashed on me with my extensive use. Most of my friends owned iPads, but I heard zero complaint about crashing. I had my iPhone 4 crashed sometimes, but it only happened to my jailbroken one. Others never crashed. You know a lot of jailbroken apps are craps. Other than that, iPad and iPhone are solid product.

Wow, here we go with another us against them. I’ve used both and just like my previous post, all the features and apps we want and use on these phones are much better experienced and enjoyed on a larger screen. Don’t be afraid to try out a larger phone Mr. Ma. It won’t hurt you. You might enjoy it.

The fact is, we want so much out of these phones, and with HD videos, movies, pics, it clearly is a much better viewing experience when using a larger screen. I liked my iPhone. But when I switched to Galaxy Nexus, I actually started using more movie/video watching apps, games, not too mention, for work, reading document became more tolerable with the larger screen.

We LOOK at our phones more than we LISTEN to them so a larger screen size is always better.

an iPhone with 1024×768? that would change the aspect ratio to 4:3 from 3:2. obvious fragmentation.

I want a 4.6″ iPhone or will look at Droids. Common Apple, catch up or start loosing out to the competition. The moment one of the Droid phones stands out from the polyglot of same-as-the-other droids, the real competition is on.

I owned a big screen phone, and im sick of it. Hard to place into pockets, carry around. I’m waiting for the next iphone release with small screen as it was before, then I’ll get one too. I think 3.5-4inch screens are ideal, bigger is not better…

Steve Jobs believed in the notion that customers don’t know what they want until they told them, and that may have been true with iPhones a couple of years ago. Now though, every man and his dog has a smart phone and we’ve all become tech obsessed. Consuming content has become the norm and customers want bigger screens at their disposal. Without a bigger screen the iPhone will continue to lose customers to the competition.

If the upcoming iPhone 6 (6th gen, common, you honestly think Apple will name it the iPhone 5 6th gen? iPhone 5 is the iPhone 4S, time to move on media outlets) doesn’t have a big screen, I’ll definitely be moving on to another device. After using a Galaxy for awhile, it kinda sucks going back to the puny screen of the iPhone 4. But after using Android for awhile, I definitley don’t want a phone with the crappy Android OS on it. I’ve been messing around with the recent Mango update for Windows Phones and I’m really impressed with what Microsoft has done with the latest build (didn’t like the older versions very much), definitely a much quicker and more fun OS than Android, even iOS. Hopefully the iPhone 6 has a bigger screen, if not I’ll be moving onto a Windows Phone

News at 6: Steve Jobs died and now Apple is changing. The stock purchase & large dividend would never ever have happened under Jobs’ control. Oh, that’s right it didn’t. So expect change now he’s gone.
Apple needs to make more money. Bigger phones are the next step. I predict 2 tiers of iPhone, with the old 4S ecosystem as the entry/mid tier and the 5 as the premium tier.

With the upgrades you mentioned there is no real fragmentation (with regards the screen) since with each change apple did not change the screen ratio (or size), they only quadrupled the screen resolution making it much easier for developers to handle the change.

In the 5 years since apple released the original iphone/ipod touch they have not once changed the screen size or screen ratio. Like I said, if it was easy they would have already done it for the 4S.

Are you kidding. I had the new iPad in m hands for 2 minutes and it crashed hahaha. Mate, I own a multitude of various Apple and Android devices. They all have crashed, but none more then any other.

I’ll buy any large screen iPhone, just to try it again for a 4th chance, but Android phones are just better ATM

I am all for a bigger screen for the new iPhone even though i don’t own one. It just makes sense to bumped the screen size up some between 4″ to 4.6″. Most ppl rely on their phones now for much of their internet use besides making calls n sending txt msgs. What is the use of all that power (dual n quad cores) in a phone if there is not enuf screen real estate to compliment it. At this point in time be it Android, iOS or Windows a 3.5″ screen for a top of the line device doesn’t cut it…mostly on a top of the line device like the iPhone 5. Apple can put a 4.3″ or 4.6″ screen on a device with a form factor slightly bigger than the 4S..just make it with an all screen face with little bezel and minimal space at both ends top and bottom for mic, ffc, speaker and their usual trackpad or space for gestures. The size of the screen on my GNex is perfect..i just hoped the total height of the device was less than 130mm achieved by reducing the non usable part of the screen in half on both ends.

Personally, I don’t see the next generation coming with a 4.6″ screen. However, if they don’t increase from the 3.5″ to a “respectable” 4.0″ screen, I am going to jump ship. There is just no reason on earth that Apple can’t figure out a larger screen. As much as I like this phone, I will not stay on board with this dinky screen. The End!

Well 4.6 would mean very similar pixel density if the resolution went to 1280 for the length but then to keep the same aspect ratio you would need 853.3 on the width

I think your real problem is you can’t handle how divided apple people are because half of them are meandering automatons who don’t care what they make as long as there is a shiny bitten apple logo on it. And half of them want to see this brand progress and truly be on top instead of always being years behind other cellular technology.

The argument that creating an iPhone with a bigger screen will fragment the platform for app developers is mostly wrong and it’s irrelevant. Why? Because the platform is already fragmented. Apple chose from the beginning to follow the rest of the mobile phone market and deliver incremental upgrades to it’s iOS devices. That’s in contrast to the games console market, where there are only a few major players, and they freeze the capabilities of the machines for years so as not to fragment the platform and end up with games that customers with older consoles can’t play with all features turned on.

The point is, we’ve already had (at least) the iPhone 3GS CPU and GPU upgrade, the iPhone 4 CPU, GPU and screen resolution upgrade, a gyro was added in at some point (can’t rem when), the iPhone 4S CPU and GPU upgrade.

These all fragment the platform for apps, which can be both a pain in the neck and an opportunity for developers. As for app users, it’s up to the developers whether users of older devices can run their apps and whether users of newer devices get app features which utilize their increased capabilities.

A screen size increase would create both another headache and another opportunity for developers, but I don’t see it creating a major split like the iPhone / iPad split because a) the size difference wouldn’t be very big and therefore b) it would still be a pocket / palm top computer, not a tablet computer. I don’t know, but there would probably be even less apps requiring it than require the iPhone 4.

and has 1024×768 (iPad 1 and 2 resolution)….. bam. no fragmentation.

I don’t see how they upgrade the resolution anymore without keeping with nice round numbers that scale very easily with past resolution. So you are looking at 1440×960 as the next smallest multiple from the original resolution on a 4.6″ screen which is 370+ ppi. That seems absurd. Plus I don’t think scaling would work that well with a 2:3 ratio. I’m not even considering doubling the resolution of the current iPhone. That would be ridiculous. To keep it the same resolution would give Android the higher ppi with the new 4″ 720p screens. I can’t see them going 4.6″.

I used to love my Droid X and it’s 4.5” screen. What I don’t love is the non-stop buggyness of this phone and the other Android products. I have gotten so tired of my phone just restarting for no reason, or my tablets just closing the web browser for no reason. Just bought my wife the iPad 3, not once has it acted up. At all. If the next iPhone has a decent sized screen I am there. I have the hands of a carpenter, not the nimble fingers of a typist. I need space.
