Thanks a lot for the explanation Matti. I have suspected the removable back cover and battery might have something to do with sturdiness, but I don't know exactly why.

I have an iPhone 4. I like it for the most part, except for the back cover. You have to use it with a case or at least a back cover sticker to avoid scratches. Why would someone design a phone with a scratchable back cover??? Does that mean you can't put a phone on a table?

Perfect holes and perfect rings. Made by tiny tools. Has this bloke ever been to a machine shop. This story is so pro apple from the first words he ever wrote. I say bull shit you were an Android user before this. I played with my mates iPhone way before I ever bought a smart phone and was never in awe about the quality of the iPhone. In fact, after a couple of months of playing with the iPhone, I came away thinking how heavy and thick it was and how you couldn't really change anything about the home screen and the such. It reminded me of phones of old that could not be customized. Yuck. How boring, so when I did finally buy a smart phone, I bought an Android and have never looked back. Granted the buttons on the iPhone are nice but I'm not going to buy a phone due to its buttons.

I like iOS and my iPhone- even after switching to the SGS2 and Note for a month a piece- but this article was a little flat. Talking about just the outside appearance of the phone (which is not all of the hardware which the article title suggested)? It was disappointing.

But supposedly leaving slashgear bc an article was posted that you don't like/agree with/ appreciate/ enjoy? Well let me be the first to tell you- Don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.

Forgot to add:
Using metal as a sort of "safety cell" on the inside of the phone might actually be good. But the iPhone 4's combination of metal and plastic on the outside actually does little for robustness. If anything, having it land on the aluminum corners would be worse for everything inside.

I'm not going to get into the Gnex/Android vs iPhone argument, but I do agree that the way the iPhone is built makes it seem more sturdy than it really is.

Plastic "2-piece" frames have always been better at dissipating impact forces. You know those phones that have the back cover and battery pop out when you drop them? That's actually better for the phone and the components inside, to some extent. The impact forces are dissipated.

Ever seen a carbon-fibre Formula1 car smash into a wall or tyre-barier? Notice how there's often less damage to the driver when the accident actually looks more violent where the car breaks to bits that fly all over the place? Now imagine the same car made of aluminum which gets bent and crushed into the drivers safety cell? Not pretty, right. That's what basically happens when you drop the iPhone. All the forces reverberate inside the metal first, impacting the components inside.

WTH? Review from last year product? There's nothing new about iPone 4ssss. Apple is the only company that can convince people to buy an overclocked iPone and say it's completely new. Such lameness for a new product. A huge disappointing on the product. It's like Apple saying "screw you guys, I'm not listening to any of you out there because I know you're going to buy it anyway."

When it comes to hardware, one other factor about Apple iPhones that Android users sometimes overlook is the sheer enormity of the accessory market for the iPhone. Cases, bags, docking stations, grill thermometers, insulin meters, guitar plugs, you name it, you can have it. And not only that, it's nice to visit hotels with iPhone ready docking station alarm clocks, and go to gyms with iPhone ready treadmills. I can't imagine not having all this with another phone.

Regardless of how you feel about Apple, you can observe that they have followed in BMW's school of thought of concentrating on a few models as opposed to GM's former school of thought of throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. The glass doesn't scratch like plastic and looks gorgeous with the aluminum band. It feels smooth and will always look great (unless you drop it). You can tell they wanted a phone that would look great for years. It also feels good in your pocket no matter how tight your pants are cuz of the narrow profile and slim design. And in over a year of ownership, it's never froze on me.

Interesting series indeed. Yes the iPhone is perfectly and beautifly built, and if you pay attention to details (or too much attention in my case) its the most perfect in terms of hardware quality. However, coming from a long history with android on HTC's (i switched to the iPhone 4s last week), i'm finding hard to cope with iOS limitations and bugs, the last being a terribly buggy Wi-Fi hotspot! i hope you will be able to get to that and maybe a fix! in your next reviews
