Apple has built rock solid products since the beginning. Sure, they cost a little more, but you know that you are buying quality and getting excellent support.
Say what you will about Apple, everyone knows they don't produce junk.
So, with all the choices available...why not make it easy on yourself and buy something that you know you will be happy with, instead of taking a chance?

That's the reason Apple does so well. People get tired of sifting through all the BS.

I agree about Tim Cook. The first thing he did as CEO was institute a matching donations program for employees...something that surely had Steve Jobs rolling over in his grave. If he opens up the iOS ecosystem, they could see huge gains. He could also drop prices to a realistic profit margin and see similar results. But, we all know that is not going to happen.

I can see that argument, but find it hard to understand how you can feel trapped...I guess 2 years seems like a long time to people. We'll see how this plays out since we've all experienced the same Windows vs Apple question our whole life. Windows open system/Apple closed system. The thing about an open system is the massive army of jobs it creates to support it! How many darn Microsoft certified techs are out their that are only skilled on changing security settings on Vista...a nightmarish mess but a massive middle class job creator.

I think Tim Cook is a pure capitalist and less ideologue as Steve Jobs. There will be subtle but drastic changes in the years to come that will help Apple not make the mistakes of the past, maintain the ecosystem that they've developed, but not be so closed as to turn away the masses.

The real Android revolution that I see going on is the incorporation into everyday household devices not limited to phones...that will probably be the way Android makes immovable inroads into our lives. Apple will slowly pick and choose the markets they can divide and conquer and maintain 40% profit margins while amassing more cash than the Pharaohs and Android will sneak into your shoelaces and monitor the lace tension to maintain a snug fit.

"..once you go iPhone, you never go back."

More like 'once you go Apple, you feel trapped.' I know several people in that situation. They like the capabilities of Android (like the Woz), but they are afraid of the transfer to the myriad of options available outside of the locked down ecosystem. Apple is like communism, Windows is like capitalism and Android is like socialism. Right now, it appears most people like the social aspect of the open source project.

The interesting part of this surge is the retention rate that Apple iPhones have over other handsets...it's like 75% versus 30-40% for the next in line...once you go iPhone, you never go back. And now that Apple offers an iPhone for all (3GS for free, 4 for $99, and 4S for $199), they've pretty much covered all customer demographics, they have achieved their product offering spread similar to what they did with the iPod...right before iPod took 80% market share for eternity. Tim Cook at the helm appears to be mass market, distribution guru. I expect for Apple to really shine in '12 and '13...and their stock is dirt cheap if you understand stocks past the bid/ask sticker price.

Yeah, important to mention that this is for US only, since apparently a lot of countries (especially Europe) are seeing a "decline" in the demand of the iPhone.

So basically that chart shows Win and BB users moving to iOS which, the majority of, are probably corporate users. Enterprise is abandoning blackberry and the only restricted & controlled platform that they can secure is iOS. Android offers too much choice and freedom (aww shucks!) for Corporate. I wouldn't call it "rocketing demand" as much as "no other choice".

What these data show is that Apple consumers were waiting for the
release of the new iPhone, as reflected in sales in the previous
quarter. If you add the total iPhone sales for the last two quarters,
they equal the projected total sales. Lower sales in 3Q, due to waiting
for the launch, and a spike in sales in 4Q, following the launch. All
that happened was iPhone sales averaged out to projections for 2H2011.
This is confirmed by the total market share. Note that these data are
US only. Sales reports during the quarter worldwide had indicated strong
sales in English speaking countries, but poor sales in non-English
speaking countries.
