Actually, you have it precisely backwards: phones should never be "free," because that ties the device to the plan. We should be free to choose the device that suits us, and shop among competitive plans without concern for which devices are supported. Paying the actual unsubsidized cost of a smartphone might reduce sales volumes, but it would also reduce the e-waste stream. It is only the unique economics of the U.S. cell industry that makes unlocked phones non-viable, but that doesn't mean the current status quo (i.e. bundling) is good for consumers.

Since McKenzie basically double-posted...
Better yet, what about China? Our lower 48 is about 3.1 mil sq. mi. Vs. their 3.7 mil sq. mi. and they have less than 40 mil 3G subscribers Vs. say Verizon's 100+ million. Using your logic for density Verizon should be paying it's customers to take an iPhone 4S (or in other words, charge significantly less than $/45mo.). Btw, the author here (Burns) inflated the monthly fee @ $60 - it starts @ 286 yuan/mo. not 386 yuan/mo. All ears, shoot...

The only ones whining are those who cant deal with the facts without bullying an entire country.

Yes the UK is smaller but it also has a population of 60 million compared to 300 million in the United States. 3G coverage in the UK barely reaches over 50% of their available land mass while in the USA is somewhere over 85%. So overall the USA has a higher percentage of subscribers to reach to. Size makes very little difference when the numbers remain proportional if anything the UK has more problems monetizing on whats available to them.

China is big enough but your argument here is that their coverage does not extend to most of the country and they overall spend less money into their infrastructure. China's population density is insane, but most of it is really poor, "cant afford a phone" type of poor, and those who can afford it live in cities. However in these cities where 3G coverage is available you have millions and millions of Chinese pulling data from the same tower, these traffic stats go beyond what anyone would considered realistic in the USA so more money has to go towards what would have been "enough" for USA traffic scenarios.

Very different countries I have to admit, one too small no so populated and one which is even bigger and over populated but with quite limited coverage. Which brings me to my next example/

Australia. You can also get an iPhone for free through vodaphone. Australia has a population of barely 22 million which is 15 times less people than the USA has. It also has a 3G coverage of almost 20% of their available landmass. About 80% of Australia (which demographics are just as sad as Canada's) does not have access to 3G coverage. How can a country near the size of the US with considerably less people and much less customer base manage to offer iPhones for free?

Competition. Just as it happens in Canada(which is where I live) theres barely any true competition in north america among ISPs. All prices are very similar across most networks and they dont seem to get any lower, even, the prices they charge for the iPhone. It used to be the same in the UK until serious regulation took place and today the environment is more affordable for consumers. If you are OK getting f#### up the a## by telecom companies, then good for you! Being happy with the rape you go through every day is one thing, but making it sound as if the raping just never happened is self-denial.

You cannot compare phone prices, contracts and plans between two countries, unless you're trying to decide if you'll move there. If you'd prefer living in China or the UK in order to get a 'free' iPhone 4S, by all means, give it a shot. Verizon and AT&T would love to have to provide coverage for a place as small as the UK. That's like covering just Minnesota, but with a population of California, New York and Ohio combined. That's true for any European country. The US (lower 48) is unique when it comes to coverage. Any other country as large as the US has huge areas without any coverage at all. Cell companies in the US spend much more on infrastructure per subscriber. If you want the free iPhones that Chris is 'tricking' you with, then move, otherwise just shut up, 'cause whining about in the comments of SlashGear won't change anything.

Yes and no. Wireless companies have a much larger area to cover in the US as well as very few shared utilities. This amounts to higher maintenance costs to cover the country, does it really equal out proportionitely? No, because we do still get scammed on top of that. Also keep in mind the taxes(both plain view and hidden such as "911 fee" which is a tax) added on.

We are on the verge of a tidal wave of horribly toxic e-waste that will end up in countries like China, Bangladesh, India and Vietnam.

Free iPhones, or any "free" phone simply reinforces a flippant attitude towards electronic waste in general. I am a big believer in refurbished electronic equipment and software than can utilize older equipment and enhance the operability of newer equipment.

Apple has done a pretty good job in doing their part to help stem the rising tide of e-waste by ensuring that several generations of thier hardware are compatible with their most current software. That is more than I can say for Android.

Not True, iPhones are way overpriced everywhere and are not open for 'bartering'. (In the UK)In the UK, unless you are *cough* silly *cough* you can push networks down on prices and the loyalty deals are well worth staying with a network for.
I am on Orange UK and currently have a HTC Desire S, 18 Month Contract, 1900 any network mins, unlimited Orange to Orange Calls, unlimited texts, unlimited Data (no fair usage cap) and my phone was free with an 8Gb SD card thrown in. I pay the grand total of £36 mer Month including insurance. ($55.54)
I am at the end of my contract and will be shortly, when orange pull their finger out, getting a GNex and because of my loyalty I will get the same contract for a lower price.
Not bad really seeing as the equivalent iPhone 4s contract would be £60+ per month on a longer contract.

If you want the free iPhones that Chris is ‘tricking’ you with, then move, otherwise just shut up, ’cause whining about in the comments of SlashGear won’t change anything.

Every single time China does something better than the US someone has to talk about their government. That's a very weak counter argument. There's absolutely no reason why carriers should be charging $200-$300 for a new smartphone on contract, you are getting ripped off, China and the UK can prove this. Living in self denial while defending multinationals that don't give a crap about your defenses but your money, is just plain sad.
