They are, the Nexus 7 getting bumped up to 32GB and same price as they were selling the 16GB previously is an example. It’s just that they’re using higher capacity as a premium to help justify price ranges that they’d prefer for establishing acceptable profit margins but they eventually will concede to pressure to increase capacities as the costs go down enough for them.

They really need to bump up capacity. Charging the same amount for the same amount of memory, when flash memory gets cheaper every year is stupid.

Those are big assumptions, but reasonable. With the Rt having near price parity with the iPad, the Surface PRO will really have to have the added value of a fully functional ultra book with all of the benefits of the tablet form factor : instant on, 1080p screen, Web browsing and graphics that hold water against iPad.

I am a firm believer that, if you are going to bring a product to market, it MUST be better or offer value. The RT is sketchy and offers minor benefits to the MS Office user who needs portability and quick access on the go. As a TABLET Media consumption device, RT offers ZERO advantages and value at its price point.

As a pure productivity device, it cannot compete with notebooks or ultra books of 11″ or more (with the exception of a few poorly made laptops with horrible track pads).

In the end, RT is a distant runner up in productivity next to PCs and clearly a first gen Tablet for media and apps for nearly the same price.

The PRO has potential and I will believe it will have the ability to do things that iPad is incapable of. If we assume that will be the case, we can assume the starting price will also be above $900, which will put expectations at the 10x level.

Not the RT, the Pro, with the x86 core i5 Processor. This is basically a computer and no iPad or Android tablet can take that- yet. Sorry I was being vague earlier, yes, the ARM based RT model still has a long way to go as its still the “new kid” with a far smaller app ecosystem, but once again, these problems will not affect the Pro and its performance output, as you should know, will be far better.

Please qualify the Surface as being “10 times better than and iPad and 3x better than Android”. I own a Surface given to me as an added productivity tool with my PC and it isn’t nearly as productive as my laptop and its browser is much slower than my iPad, which is my primary activity on a tablet. Is the 10x based on other metrics or measurements that hasn’t been published yet? I do find the Surface useful on airplanes with its instant on and portability, but everywhere else, the laptop is still more productive and the IPad still rules for tablet-based activities.
My take is this – if Microsoft can add value by getting its browser, media playback and Key apps up to snuff, while adding the layer of productivity that iOs and Android do not offer, I will consolidate to Windows. For now, Surface is a niche product that does not excel or even meet par among its competitors at the $499 price point.

If an app works on the third gen(ios 6), then it will run on the fourth. Currently, all my 120 ish apps work on ios 6.
If an app is not updated, it will possibly crash.
Many dont even require an update.

Surface, running Windows 8 is ten times better than an iPad and around 3 times better than Android when it comes to OS. And it also has the performance advantage along with the Nexus 10 as both processors are next generation to A6X. The iPad has an ordinary IPS display which isnt even 16:9, for true HD resolution, something the Nexus 10 and Surface has covered- Nexus 10 even more. And no, the Mini screen does not look better than the Nexus 7. All it has is more brightness, which isnt much.

Right, my mistake, it was the iPhone that got the incremental increase in RAM.

Though you’re not getting all of the RAM usable because the GPU’s each takes some for video memory.

The Dr Who video is SD so surely both displays would show it similarly and therefore a useless test as video is not upscaled – none of the Christopher Eccleston episodes were shot in HD as the tardis set wasn’t good enough

browsing is the #1 tablet activity. Android and iOS have matured and excelled in tese two areas. For some rason, MS did nit care to be competetive in tis one benchmark, which left me very disappointed in the Surface. I agree with you 100%. The new iPad 4th gen is a worthy update and I don’t feel bitter that Apple is continually improving its products to stay ahead of the curve.

Did I read this right? The ipad 4th gen is slower than the third gen when doing video crunching 1 minute video at 720p and 1080p ?

Apple normally doesn’t use version numbers for their products and they wanted to go back to that norm for the iPad series. So they simply refer to it as the new iPad, starting with the 3rd gen.

So like the iPods, we’re probably going to have to call them by generation version.

Basically, they want to emphasize the name instead of what version it is…

If I recall, the official word from Tim Cook was that the iPad 3 (commonly known before now as the New Ipad) will now be called the Old-New Ipad, or just old/new for short.

The iPad 4 will be referred to as the New-New iPad, or NuNu for short.

In terms of RAM it’s 1GB, up from 768GB of the 3rd gen and double the 512MB of the iPad 2…

In terms of storage capacity it remains the same at 16/32/64 options…

I would agree with your assessment, the tablet market is really changing, and in a good way. With Microsoft and Google finally coming out and innovating, the iPad is starting to look less and less appealing. It is the same thing as it was 2 years ago. Now it has some competition that will prompt innovation forward again. …. Still waiting for my surface in the mail :)

Before someone rags on you for putting the surfave ahead of the retina, In terms of Contrast and Vibrantcy (dont think thats a word) Surface is better… Just look at Mini vs Nexus 7… Mini screen looks better even tho it has substantually less dpi

Better wi-fi
Global LTE

Go play with a Surface and you’ll quickly realize the iPad 4 or Nexus 10 are the way to go. Surface will have a lot of growing pains this first year, but I am sure will improve. It’s just to laggy and bulky for me.
