More heat is less efficient use of power. Btw there is not a quad core processor in the ipad 3, there is a quad core gpu. I used one at Best Buy and it was too hot to handle like the first IBM laptops. There is no excuse for all that heat.
Mine gets hot all over; the photoshop and avid studio aps make it too hot to hold. Doing not much of anything,it's still gets uncomfortably warm. The vid program froze once and it has a harder time managing media, but no error mesage. I took it to the genius bar, the guy took it back
And ran some diagnostics, and pronounced it "fine". If somebody gave Steve Jobs a prototype like mine to hold, he would have thrown it across the room.

If the thing is charging it gets hotter on the side near the plug, but mine gets hot all over.

Probably the best policy but hard to follow if using it out in a brightly lit area, especially under the sun.

While I think the quad GPU is also a factor, since GPU's tend to generate more heat than most other components and the high resolution screen means higher average work load. So issue shouldn't be just the stronger back light and battery load.

Hot is relative, what's too hot for a sealed device like the iPad is not the same as a device with active cooling systems like fans, etc. The excess heat simply can't be dissipated as quickly in a completely sealed device.

Mind most of the iPad is now composed of the 42WHr battery and excess heat is generally not a good thing for the type of battery they are using. So tolerance ranges can't be compared to something designed to tolerate far more heat like a MacBook.

Besides, just because it doesn't effect you doesn't mean it isn't happening. The higher temperatures have been confirmed and can't be disputed but that doesn't mean everyone will be having problems as not everyone will be in a environment and/or usage scenario that will allow the iPad to get too hot but for a small minority it could be a issue and there is nothing wrong with pointing that out to those who may put the iPad under less than ideal conditions. While it also doesn't mean it can't still be a great product for the rest.

I keep the iPad at 1/4 brightness, but I generally use in the evening. I prefer natural tones and intensity on screen. You wouldn't read a book under a 500 watt super bright metal halide would you?

Its all Hype! I've had my iPad several days now.. I've put it through it's paces, played graphic intensive games while playing music via AirPlay, watched full 1080p movies. The back is a little warm nothing more... My MacBook gets far hotter when charging it!!

It's funny how people say "glad I don't have one" just becuase such a small thing that I wouldn't even consider as being a problem.

Just so that I'm totally clear, temprature wise, the iPad is not a hot device.

If the new iPad stops functipning, as claimed, I'm glad I don't own one. How about we try to reproduce that outcome and find out when that will happen?
