I don’t think there will ever be a perfect device unless people are identical and have identical and narrowly-scoped needs. What you describe may well be perfect for yourself. But I can’t even conceive of something that would be perfect for everything I do, let alone that of others.

Well geuss what is coming in September/October the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Rumour has it it will be same size as the original but thinner and lighter with a Quad Core Exynos A15 processor, 2GB RAM, 16/32/64 GB Capacity + Micro SD slot (For additional 64GB) and not 1080p display but we can dream for it. Oh and did i mention 12-13 MP camera with stylus ofcourse as well as Android 4.1 JELLYBEAN. Start saving up your pennies because the NOTE is coming!!!!!

The Nexus 7 does look really nice. Its the first device I know of that is that size and price while not skimping on the hardware specs.

I personally think this a hoax or at least a non realistic release date. I think the apparent “leaked dates and info” are just an attempt to stop possible fence sitters from buying the Nexus 7. Again this is just my opinion. Not a cut on apple products either, though I have already pre ordered the Nexus 7. :)

You think Apple makes nothing off of accessories, apps, music, and movies?

Besides, Apple’s got comfy margins on the iPad and huge economies of scale. I’ll bet it has more room to be price competitive than what you think. Besides, people will pay more for the much broader functionality.

It remains to be seen whether Amazon’s razor blade model will work, and Google makes more money per iOS device on ads than it does from Android. Presumably, Google bought Motorola because it realized that it had to be in the hardware business to compete, since giving away an operating system and selling ads is not exactly a winning business model.

The Fire may be hurt by the Nexus, but Apple will easily take a majority of the 7-inch tablet market as soon as one is offered. Might be some cannibalism, but people who prioritize the smaller screen and cheaper price would otherwise be lost to competitors. Apple would rather grab them.

Apple’s problem isn’t making a smaller tablet, it’s the price they have to offer it at. Amazon makes money off of accessories and services they sell for the Kindle, and Google wants as many Nexus 7′s in the wild so they can advertise. Apple will have to mark up it’s 7-inch to make a profit. If it’s below $299, it will probably cannibalize sales from the new iPad. Above $299, and people will rationalize a slightly higher price for more screen, or it will still undercut the new iPad.

Sorry to speak ill of the dead, but Jobs was an idiot. By saying adult fingers are too big for 7 inch tablets, he was actually maligning his own breakout product: The iPhone. How are adults supposed to use a 3.5 inch screen for surfing? That’s what he designed it to do before the iPad came along. Suddenly tablets have to be 10 inches or they are useless? Apple will rue the day they listened to that stupidity. I see “phablets” becoming the mainstream. Phones with screens under 5 inches will be an oddity.
The new iPhone5 will be a disappointment if its screen is still the same width only a longer aspect ratio. I want an iPhablet5 or I am jumping ship and getting the Galaxy Note II when it comes out at the same time in the fall.

Silly article. It’s simple: if Apple decides it can make a good 7-inch tablet and can sell a lot of them, the company will go full steam ahead regardless of what Jobs said two years ago. Amazon did really well last holiday season with a smaller tablet, and Apple knows it can make a better one and take a big chunk of that market.

The fact that Jobs criticized the 7-inch size in the past will produce a few articles like this one, but ultimately nobody will care. It will not “damage Apple’s credibility.”

Do you suppose the critics who have been blasting Apple for not making a smaller tablet will praise the decision, or will they just find something else to complain about? My guess is the latter.

I think the “Ultimate” mobile device will be something around 5.5 inches. Maybe between 6 to 7 inches.

Software “front” buttons, and ultra-thin bezels. Essentially a “very large” phone.
A 5.5″ display could (easily) fit in the Galaxy Note. Build it probably, I would argue that you could make a 6 or 6.5 inch version that (really) WON’T be bigger than the current Galaxy note. It might be (slightly) wider, but other than that, it should still be the same size.

Stick a 1080p display in there, 2.0GHz dual core S4, 2GB memory, 32/64/128GB memory, killer camera, and you (essentially) will have the BEST mobile device. Small enough to be a phone, but big enough to be a tablet.
(oh, and it will have a stylus)

I think Apple is attempting to go after the kindle fire market. but personally i don’t believe that Amazon sells so many of those because it is 7″ as much as the lean price tag. I can’t imagine an iPad with the same guts but smaller screen as its big brother would cut down on the price all that much.

My jailbroken iPhone 4S can do everything the iPad 3 can do, and then some. If I want to watch an entire movie, I stream Netflix on my PS3 for that. Why would I want to watch something on a 10in screen when I have a 46in HDTV to watch it on? iPad is nice, but I regret buying it. It hasn’t changed or enhanced the way I live. It was basically a huge waste of money. If I was a heavy traveler, I could see myself using it more, but I’m not. iPad is a gigantic iPod touch and a 7in version will further fuel that opinion. I love my iPhone, but iPad is all about hype, at least in my opinion.

this may be overkill for the big fruit company. those that want a tablet have one and offering one that is larger than an iPhone but smaller than an iPad will not make a fence-sitter jump in and buy.

this is a product in search of a market, a solution in search of a problem and will damage Apples credibility.
