Totally agree. I have a Nook Color but it's really glitchy after the last update- which is why I'm looking to replace it. There is no comparison between the 7" and the iPod. I can't read on that small of a screen and, like you, I read a lot.

One of the reasons they're supposedly sticking with 4:3 and the resolution that's been predicted is so that existing apps won't require any kind of modification to work.

As far as cannibalization goes, that's something Jobs actively encouraged as long as it's your own products that are doing it. In this case, while the mini will probably eat into some sales of the iPad, I'm pretty sure it'll take considerably more business from other companies.

Why does everyone want to compare a 7 inch tablet to an iPod? They aren't the same thing. I own a Nook Tablet and love it. I would never even consider it the same as my iPod, even though it holds music and video. The same goes for an Apple iPad Mini (or whatever it's named). I read 40 - 50 books a year. I love having that on a tablet and it's great to travel with. There's no way I would read that much on an iPod. Plus, surfing the web on a 7 inch is much nicer.

I will probably buy a 7 inch iPad because I prefer the quality, the OS and all of the other applications available. And I'll still keep my iPod for working out.

I'm sorry but I just don't see the need for this object by any mean. It will more than likely still maintain the 4:3 aspect ratio of the iPad and have applications that will need to be properly reprogrammed with in order to appear properly (read, not squished or not elongated).

Though I also think that the iPad is a horrible tablet (prepares to be downvoted) due to the fact that it honestly is NOT a tablet OS, but instead a bloated phone OS that is being carried by the applications, most of which are applications that should not be needed in the first place and instead be baked into the OS (cough*printing*cough).

Maybe I'm just having a hard time understanding the need of an iPod Touch Large (already have an XL model) that will cannibalize sales of their own product; and while I know that is a component of hyper-competition this is an item that I honestly do not feel is needed.

because BOM (Bill of Materials) + Manufacturing Cost would probably cost about the same. for both 16GB Wifi iPad Mini and 5th Gen. iPod Touch. i'm guessing around 190~200. oh yeah. and 4 inch 1136x640 display panel probably cost more than 7 inch 1024x768 one too.....
i mean if apple really wants to screw Kindle and Nexus7, and Win8 RT Surface.
they can have 7 inch 8GB wifi ipad mini at 250 or 300 or how ever cheap to under cut ipod touch. it doesn't matter. as long as it covers BOM they ain't losing any money, like Kindle. but they know they make hella money on APP STORE/ CONTENTS THAT SELL. u see, google tried low price Nexus 7 hoping to sell contents... but how android is made...... they're not doing great at selling movies, books, tv shows, apps...... cuz people can just SO EASILY download them and load them to android , far more convenient than iOS.
