While people like myself usually provide our own tech support, which especially comes in handy if you want to do things with the system that the manufacturer doesn’t ;-p 

Along with sites like iFixit that apparently finds enough people who want to tinker with their Apple, and a few other different companies, products to run a business showing how to take them apart and providing the needed tools and even parts.  Especially products that use glass like the iPhone and often get dropped and not everyone can wait the time it takes to mail it in for repair.  Never mind Glassgate issue for the iPhone 4, it’s a nice design but hardly all that durable.

The past issues I mentioned though were still worse than what you may think.  On antenna gate Apple basically lied about other phones having the same problem.  It’s true many had similar issues of signal strength being effected if you held the phone a certain way but this wasn’t a rampant problem and unlike the iPhone issue they usually never caused a total loss of signal.

The issue with the iPhone 4 was that the antenna was placed externally and fully exposed, while most other phones kept them internal.  So it was contact with it that was causing the problem and not just interference from the way the phone was held.  The actual fix was just to insulate the antenna with something but aside from add ons like a rubber wrap on they never changed the manufacturing to fix the issue except for the 4S.

So Apple, like many other companies, often tries to spin the facts in their favor and minimize the public damage of their mistakes but this sometimes goes to the point of denial and they don’t always fix the problem but rather just wait till they can replace the product.

Like the iPhone and MacBookPro with plastic casing instead of aluminum had cracking issues.  The iPhone even had instances where it was sold with the cracks despite being clearly visible in their clear boxes before Apple finally responded.  While the MacBook Pro, Apple did provide usually free repairs but the cracks would always return and they never fixed the design but instead just went back to aluminum with the next model release.

Mind the worst cases did result in lawsuits against Apple but aside from such extreme examples…

Apple does provide better than average support to their customers, but that’s usually considered part of the reasons why you would pay more for their products and they didn’t become possibly the richest single company in the world without making significant profits on their products.  So it’s not like it costs them much to provide good service most of the time.

As for antennagate issue, apple leveled out and said “Nothing is perfect” and did a press conference on how other phone did the same “antennagate”. Lease to say apple put large amount of resources and it’s top engineers to create an engineering marvel. Being a leader of technology industry such as apple, they would need to innovate and present product before the competitors, by logic, their are gonna be flaws. But you have a point, flaws like the magsafe and plastic issues *should* have been fixed after ONE generation but chose not too. This is probably the result of greed and profit (Which apple is not immune to) and I don’t disagree.

All products at some point become obsolete and “Dropped”, I agree with you completely but in this circumstance of the user > “Spent…”, he assumes that apple will drop support for the iPad 2 because of the iPad 3s announcement. The majority of corporation like Samsung have “dropped” support on their product because newer upgrade model took priority. While Apple at lease recognizes this and attempts to break this cycle to give consumers confidence in the products life span. In other words, Apple dosen’t throw you out to the wolves (of obsolesce) as quick as other corporations. 

I agree that Apple, and all corporations like it, *do not and ever will* have a perfect track record but apple *at present time* at lease attempts to give consumers confidence in there major electronic purchases. 

One thing I completely disagree with you. Lol. In my opinion, Apple tech support via the Internet, Phone, and in-store makes all the difference in the world when I make major purchases. I rather talk to a human being (Whom is paid very well & American) to talk about my purchased product and help me. I rather walk into a store and talk to a genius(Whom is also paid well & knows their products very well) to service my product ASAP. I rather have fast and efficient Internet support as a alterante communication source then the ones I already mentioned. I rather have Apple service in contrast to talking to a guy in india who knows/barley understands any english (& about the product) and wait 2-6 weeks to ship my products and have slow tedious internet/phone support (No in-store BTW).  This is probably why apple products cost a pretty penny Lol.   

Again I not trying to disagree with you but attempting to clarify my argument with that jackass “spiderObama”. And at lease give the user “Spent..” some confidence and avoid buying other products from other corporations who care less about the consumer unlike apple. I been down that road before and it sucks so I merely wanted  to prevent another fellow human making that mistake.       

There have been times Apple has put style ahead of quality, like the iPhone Antenna issue and how they handled it, both iPhone and MacBook Pro plastic casing cracking issues and how they handled that as well, the magsafe took years to get a proper fix, among other examples of when quality faltered.

While much of the support only lasts as long as the product is still compatible with existing new products.  The moment they are no longer compatible then the older product gets dropped.

So it’s not like they have a perfect track record, though otherwise they are generally better than most.  However, it takes more than just good tech support to make products appealing and Apple can’t rely on its market momentum forever to stay ahead of the competition.

I guess you skipped the part that pointed out that Apple has already changed the naming scheme when they released the iPhone 3G which was in reference to the 3G capability. The iPhone 3Gs was in reference to the increased speed that the phone offered and the 4s is in reference to Siri which is only available on that device as of now. The iPad HD would be in line with the naming scheme because one it has an HD screen and two because there has never been an Apple “3″ of anything.
