This is absurd, it has been all over the place that the 4G ipad only works on Verizon and AT&T, you even have to buy a specific brand for AT&T or Verizon I decision that you have to be in order to buy one.

And even if you don't buy that argument since the ITU defined 4G as HSPA+ or LTE , it's a 4G device either way by definition.
If someone goes out and buys a cellular device it is their responsibility to know if it works with their service, and they don't need to be technically inclined to do that, a call to your provider or asking someone in the apple store will let you know.

Consumers have to learn to be less ignorant, period.

"Unfortunately Joe Public is not necessarily technically savvy.
Most
people don't understand the basics of the internal combustion engine
under the hood of their car, but everyone goes out and buys one.
Hence
Apple should recognise this and market their product appropriately,
rather than flood every region with the same sales pitch".

And Apple is responsible for this in what way?

The device is able to connect at 4G speeds. International travelers might be interested in this fact. If it is able to connect on a 4G network then it should be allowed to be advertised as such.

Downside is of course that without the 4G feature, the new iPad is rather less attractive.

This is getting ridiculous.

It is clearly stated which frequencies the new iPad works in Gsm, 3G and LTE.

Itʻs a matter of reading the specifications before buying and that comes from the consumer itself.

Companies canʻt babysit these idiots just because they donʻt take the time to read those specifications on Apple website or websites that offers information like GsmArena and such.

Too funny. So Apple has to tell some idiot that they cannot connect to a 4g network if there is none in place... I guess Ferrari needs to be sure and tell folks that they will not be able to drive 160 MPH if there are no public roads where they are allowed to do so... The 4g ipad will work on 4g networks where there is one in place. It will also connect to 3g or lesser networks. I would imagine it is up to the consumer to know what the network capabilities are in their region and buy accordingly. Apple also sells a WIFI only version of they ipad. So if you are not planning on using cellular data or don't want to connect at slower 3g or what have you speeds then buy the WIFI only model. Sounds like a frivolous claim to me.

The problem is their speed will not up to that of the 4G network in Australia. That's why they're not allowed to do it as it will mislead consumers. Improved speed doesnt mean 4G speed.

So they're arguing over a matter of nomenclature. As long as the consumer sees improved speed, up to that comparable to LTE, why is this an issue?

Australian 4G refers to the LTE network only. At the moment, only one Australian Telco (Telstra) is offering an LTE service on 1800MHz. Optus will be starting theirs in the next couple of months.

The 700MHz spectrum is some years away from being released for use in Australia, Telstra are looking at options including the conversion of their 900MHz GSM network to LTE in the future.
