There is much more to Lithium based batteries than the typical or educated consumer is aware of. Specifically battery degradation issues as the cell ages naturally or through repeated charging / discharging. In essence, the noted 11.6 Ah battery noted in the article is very large and contains an amazing amount of energy density for the finished package (iPad3 or whatever generation) size of a consumer based product. This is all well and good, but could cause longer charge times, fewer life cycles, much higher replacement cost of the battery, and lastly the potential of the iPad housing coming apart due to the highly probable and unavoidable cell swell.

Food for thought... consider the typical LiIon battery has a projected 400 cycles life cycle of (1 charge / 1 discharge) before degrading in capacity. The inherent degradation reduces the running time of each charge slightly until you reach about 70% of the rated capacity. Simply stated, as example if the iPad operates for 10 hours when brand new on a fully charged battery, then after a year's worth of charging / discharging if done daily, will cause the run time to degrade by a few hours. The capacity / degradation curves are NOT linear, once you reach a low threshold, run time starts falling quicker.

Wrong ;-)

It depends on what your usage plan is, and what made them need to uprate the battery. If the bigger battery is to drive the screen, then other uses that use the screen less just got a large boost. For instance, iPad 3 will be able to capture one very long GPS trace...

I must admit, when I first got my iPad 2, I was sceptical of how long its battery would actually last.
A few months on and I'm still only charging it every 3 days. It gets used daily. I'm hoping to make it last as long as I can. When the forth gen iPad comes out, that's when I'll upgrade. I only got my baby in July.

Not really in this case. They are good at proving critics of new concepts wrong, but rarely do they actually push the technological limits... in that sense, they are normally quite conservative. In other words, they don't push the technological envelope... just the marketing one.

Fact is, they aren't that good at pushing tech. Look at iCloud and how long it took them to actually make it happen. That's because it required real tech innovation. Other examples include the iPhone4 antenna and even the white bodies - both of which showed many problems.

Sony Vaio Z2 made bigger strides in mid 2011 imho. Z1 had a battery of 5600mAh and lasted 5-6h (official quote). Faster and lighter Z2 (albeit without a dedicated nvidia card, but the quoted time for Z1 was for the integrated intel card anyway) with 4000mah battery lasted 6-7h (official quote again). At about the same mass and size with optional sheet battery as Z1, Z2 is quoted to last 12-14h. This means roughly 50% processing power improvements and double the endurance for the same aspect ratio.

Of course, Vaio Z is insanely expensive due to custom engineering Sony puts into it. Oh, both Z1 and Z2 have been coming with 1920x1080 13.1" panels for a few years now (>170dpi).

As far as duration goes, I hope Asus Transformer TF700 really pushes the limit to >20h with the dock and a 1920x1200 panel. That'd be one sweet deal.

My family and I have owned five different Android devices. We're honest folks and can honestly say... No, Android does not rule. I believe the majority of Android owners don't own it because it's better than an Apple device, we own it because it didn't cost as much or our carrier doesn't have the iPhone.

Yes, I'm an Android user.
No. Android does NOT rule.

You've probably been hiding under a rock the last year. What is the main complaint of users of 4G phones or phones with larger screens? The battery runs out too quickly! One of the main concerns with adding a retina display was that it was going to significantly decrease battery life, a problem that gets compounded if you add 4G. The fact that Apple apparently solved this issue is impressive in itself.

Also, your definition of energy efficiency is suspect. Yes, it uses twice the energy in the same amount of time, but NOT to power the same components, so that's not a fair comparison.
