What bugs me is that the data plan for the IPad is what I tried to get if I would buy an IPhone. I have a company provided cell phone that I have to carry 24x7. I have no need for another cell phone. I tried to find out if you could get a data only plan for an IPhone without having cell service but AT&T won't sell you that. I asked if you could pay for the data plan separately and attach it to my existing AT&T phone plan. No. Now the IPad comes along with exactly what I wanted, but now its not a small device like an IPhone. I went with a IPod touch 32gb which is most of what I want but only has WiFi capabilities.

Correction to last post. They demand you use Wifi. With the cell companies also demanding you keep a data plan for your smart phone even if you buy it outright and off contract, I much perfer to run with a Mifi for my slate, laptop, and cellphones.

The data plan SOUNDS like a good deal. However, if you are limited to what you can do with it, then its pointless. AT&T won't let you stream movies over the data plan you're paying for. You can't download from iTunes nor a whole host of other things. No they demand you use 3G.

I'd like to hear I can stream my Netflix App from the beach before I get to excited over this *unlimited* data plan.

First, the main thing the Ipad has going for it is the slickness of the design for both hardware and UI. For the comment about having no camera, this device is not replacing a phone (although a camera with a 10" LCD would be nice). This product is a cross between an Ipod, eReader, and portable laptop. The e-mail feature is only usable in a mobile setting if you get the 3G version and pay for the data service.

The main users of the Ipad will be tech-savvy people who are probably already paying for a data plan (or have their work paying for it). I am currently paying $45 for a corporate data plan and my phone bill comes to $90+ after corporate discount. Paying an additional $15 - $30 for 3G does not sound like a good deal to me, but more like robbery. As an owner of an Iphone or Blackberry locked into a 2-year plan, getting an Ipad with the intention of using mobile e-mail would force me to pay for 2 data plans. That's like paying for internet service for each device at my house. I will stick with my laptop for now until Steve Jobs decides to allow tethering or someone finds out a way to do it.

Wow, you took the words right out of my mouth :) I am very excited about the ipad, although I understand that because I live in the uk there may be delays on when we get options such as ibooks, but hey - I can use the kindle app till then. one thing \I was wondering about, on the keynote Jobs said that the 3g networks would not be up internationally until june - I was planning on getting the 3g version, however I also wanted the 64gb edition - is it really worth me spending the extra money for 3g? Thankies :D

Wow. . . those comments don't really seem to fit with this article at all. It's about the breakthrough arrangement for the data plans. $29.99 for unlimited data . . no contract . . . cancel at anytime . . . activate it from the device itself? Unheard of. This agreement can in fact open a whole slew of new possibilities for everyone down the road.

Now as to address the comments above.... I agree with Jobs. I hate netbooks. All they are, are slower, smaller, more cheaply made versions of a laptop. If that's what you want then have fun.

However, that is not really what they are taking aim at. Think more, ebook reader on steroids. The intro model is only $100 more than the Kindle DX, and yet can do sooooo much more. And yes, $229 more if you get 3G entry model. But even still, now you have a device, that can will potentially allow you some choice. There is a kindle App, and a Barns and Noble app, and Apple's store . . .hmm seems like 3 choices are better than just one. . .Also, you can use just about any app from the app store, surf the web, do email, for $9.99 you can get pages and if you purchase the keyboard dock you have some word processing . . . seems to me like this is really either a whole different class of device, OR taking ebook readers to task for what they really should have been.

No, I don't think I said that at all. I said I expect that - at some point - Apple will introduce multitasking to both iPhone and iPad; however I'm also a firm believer that you should buy a device because it satisfies your needs now, not based on some potential update who-knows-when down the line.

Cheaper data plans, however, were the big surprise from the Apple event yesterday. Hence my saying that perhaps they - not the iPad - were the real star of the show.

so users should pony up twice the money to buy this thing and HOPE apple eventually allow multitasking and flash? while still has no camera, no usb port. 512MB RAM, an ARM cpu. 16G HDD.

rather than go buy a Dell mini and have everything right now? faster CPU, more RAM, more HDD, camera, multitasking, run almost any app, connect to any peripheral?

You guys sure have "hope" for apple, so sorry ass users just live in the future? and suffer from real world?
