Okay, if ANYTHING can have a retina display, like the iPod and iPhone, then they can just put more pixels onto it... It may cost a ton, but it's possible. the bigger you get, the more possible it is, because then you have more room to work with. if there was a 20ft x 20ft iFloor that was as thin as the iPhone, they could do the retina display with room to spare. its just a matter of flattening everything. I will not buy an iPad until it has a retina display, because iPads look just plain fail and low-tech without it.

It's a little too early IMO to really start speculating about anything iPad 3 related regardless of what prototypes are floating around Cupertino. The mobile landscape changes exponentially in a year (or more), and by the time the iPad 3 is released, who knows wtf will be available.

However, don't get ahead of yourselves what Apple can do with hardware. People are so enamored by the shiny aluminum casing and the slick software that they forget that Apple uses plain jane hardware just like every other manufacturer on the planet sourced from the same vendors. Actually, they're generally the slowest to adopt newer technologies.

"Retina" display was marketed as some revolutionary technology, when in fact older phones, like the Droid 1, packed in 480 x 854 resolution on a 3.7" screen, for an effective 265 PPi, on a phone released a full 8 months BEFORE the iPhone 4. Motorola declined to give it a flashy name and hold a 2 hour press conference about it, and didn't propagate "PPi" as the new buzz word, so it all flew under the radar.

While a 2048 x 1536 display is admittedly awesome, be sure, that if Apple has it, pretty much every other manufacturer will have it, or will already be adopting technologies surpassing it (not necessarily meaning resolution either, ex. new lighting technologies)

I admit, I did laugh a little at the title. If I had the jewels to run a tech blog, I'd have replaced iPad 3 with "future models" but it works for the whole, getting attention thing.

As long as this site gets the views it needs to stick around, I don't mind a little TMZ style.
