Simple is good but Windows 8 still provides "under the hood" access for those who do want to customize and not just use the system. So it should appeal to a pretty wide market segment.

The number of people who like to tinker hasn't actually changed, it's just more people are using the product than there use to be. So it's just the ratio of people involved gives the perception of change but it's a bigger market and it's true simple and easy to use does appeal to the majority now.

Incorrect, the market for tablets was always there and they were just the first to successfully tap into it. You can go back decades with people thinking of tablet like products and ways to use them and is why they kept on trying no matter how badly each attempt went.

The technology just hadn't gotten to the point that tablets could be all that practical but Apple decided to not go for a full Tablet PC but a Tablet like device that could fill the basic functions with the available technology.

The iPad's limitations are as pointed out both Software and Hardware based! Neither the first or second iPads could have ever properly run the more capable desktop OS needed to give it access to run the more powerful desktop programs.

A mobile OS is limited by design no matter the basis of its coding and kernel. So in turn the hardware needed to run it doesn't need to be powerful in order to run it well.

So the paradigm you speak of never changed, hardware still chases software but Apple knew the technology wasn't there yet and so settled for less and proved that as long as the product is still fun and easy to use that it can still be a success even if otherwise limited.

Thus they redefined the market by showing they didn't need to provide everything to still provide a successful market.

The thing you don't realize though is that once we do have the technology to let tablets properly run a desktop OS and the desktop OS can take advantage of this is when the kinds of tablets Apple makes now will become obsolete!

The reasons things like keyboards and services like Citrix, etc. are growing in demand is because people only settled for what the iPad and others of its type could offer but they always wanted more and when it finally becomes possible to provide more then they will no longer be willing to settle for less!

I'll wait and see, just as I will wait and see with the Ipad HD or 3 or whatever they will name it. I wait and see because it's not a final release yet so it's not out there for sale to judge, only a bets, and the Ipad 3 is not out yet, so why bother guessing what it will be or how Windows 8 also will run? Writers seem to be low on topics I think.

Not once did Zachary mention Android in either of his posts above.

Stop getting defensive. He wasn't saying anything about Android being better than iOS or vice-versa. He was saying that iOS isn't really an OS to replace OSX or Windows, and I agree with him for the most part. It's way too limited. You can't even chose how to sort your files, heck you can't even transfer files to/from an external storage device like you can with a "regular" OS.

PC=Personal Computer: iPad has no accounts: just the owner ->>> as personal as it gets, Macs and Windoze do have user profiles: not PC's.
iPad not only refines PC's, it is about the first real PC, other were just WC's or FC's (working computers or family computers).
And what is all the hoopla about? It is just a 2048x1536 screen iPad, nothing else. Which means: NO APPLE COMPUTER IS SUITABLE FOR 1:1 APP DEVELOPMENT! HA!!!!

I actually like the Consumer preview of windows 8... I have been using Mac for 10years and I threw out my last Windows computer 5 years ago I was running XP. I recently tried to connect a Windows 7 laptop to my home network and it literally took me 30mins to figure out how to do it!! I'm no tech dummy, I just wasn't familiar with how things work in current windows, but it should not be as technical as they made it. I can connect my Xbox, my phones, my PS3, my Wii, I can connect every device I own faster than you can make Windows 7 connect to a network. This is why I loved Window8, they have simplified things enough for the common user. I love the tiles!! When I turn on my PC, I just want to hit the net and maybe run 2 or 3 programs. I could care less about everything else. I can load my main programs on to tiles and get going. If I need to get down and dirty and do technical things, at least I have the option to do so, without all that confusion in my face. The average person doesn't care for all that technical mumbo-jumbo, I think a lot of computer guys still feel they should be able to get in there and be able to work on their own stuff, like my dad used to tune up his own cars in the 70's and 80's. THOSE DAYS LONG GONE. I'm not touching the inside of my car and I'm not trying to open my cell phone or my laptop the way I did with my Compaq Presario in the late 1990's. The majority of computer users aren't writing code, we're enjoying content. Who ever makes it easiest for me to do that, and put it all in a pretty little lightweight package is the winner in my book. Mac is simple, but way too limiting, I still needs Windows for certain things, so I'm betting Windows8, to win me back!!!!

I actually like the Consumer preview of windows 8… I have been using Mac for 10years and I threw out my last Windows computer 5 years ago I was running XP. I recently tried to connect a Windows 7 laptop to my home network and it literally took me 30mins to figure out how to do it!! I’m no tech dummy, I just wasn’t familiar with how things work in current windows, but it should not be as technical as they made it.
I have a tablet. That being said, I don't use it as much as I did when I first bought it.

Why? I have found out, it's FAR easier to do stuff on my phone and computer. Well, if you have a phone with a large display, the need for a tablet goes down.

What do (or did) I use my tablet for?
1) listen to music
2) browse the web
3) check emails
4) look at photos
5) watch movies
6) play games7) write or work on documents.I have found out, far easier to most on my phone. And the phone is far easier to carry around. That being said, #7? Oh man, the touchscreen is a pain in the ass if you are going to write a lot off stuff. Yes, buy an keyboard. But where are you at? at a computer. And a computer is far easier to carry around than your tablet, keyboard, SD/USB ports, etc... So, what will I do?1) get rid of my tablet2) buy a phone with a larger display. (wished nokia made something with a 5.5 to 6.5 inch display)3) buy a new laptop. (I'm in the market for a new one)I have found it's far easier to carry 2 devices around with me, than 3. (the third being the tablet)

The preview is still not final version, remember we're still about 6 months from final release and the Metro UI is suppose to be optimized for both mouse and touch usage. You're also forgetting the desktop mode that can be used instead of the Metro and for desktop systems should be the default.

Apps like Office will also be offered in both Metro and Traditional desktop UI and the Intel Apps store isn't full of just touch only apps.

The only thing is getting used to the Charms Bar and Hot Corners instead of using the old Start Menu but the functionality is still there and people just have to get used to it.

I am still trying to come to grips with that MSFT has done. Don't get me wrong, it will not be perfect (iOS and OS weren't either-don't let us forget that salient point), there will be quirks, and the lacking in patience will turn to an "easier" OS. After seeing the demo at MWC, there's more to Windows 8 than just an interface (all the boards persons are complaining about the UI/Metro UI). I took an objective step back, and looked at both OS's. They cannot be compared. Full stop. It will be foolhardy to think that we can truly compare iOS (not OSX) to Windows 8..absolute nonsense.

Windows 8 is onto something, granted it will take time to get it perfect (hold it....there's not a perfect OS-anyone who thinks to iterate this will be lying upfront). Personally, I prefer the "duller" non-bells and whistles but somewhat clean Metro UI" (don't try to be iOS cool Redmond, you will fail) to the UI of iOS. Not everyone is about apps despite the sales numbers.

The title is also highly misleading. When someone thinks of a PC (lets be honest for once here OK), one thinks mainly of a desktop (we are yet to call laptops/note books and net-books PC's by virtue of function (firstly), then a desktop based OS (be that OSX, Windows or Linux.) The average person doesn't think iPad/Zoom/Galaxy Tab. On that front alone, the title fails to convey a held perception of what a desktop entails. No folks, iPad 3 cannot redefine the PC, it's a tablet in every way. It's a "mobile" device with a "mobile" OS. Hence, this latest iteration of the iPad will posses the same iOS, not OSX ,albeit with many improvements. However, Redmond is attempting what is yet to be tried and proven. A non compromised OS in Windows 8. I am only going on what has been printed , and what I've seen demonstrated. There will be apps (by virtue of misnomer) available for the Windows 8 platform. Windows 8 on Desktop/Tablet/Phone will be "across" all form factors. This yet has to be achieved by any other OS creator.

Looking at it based on what has been shown, Windows 8 indeed indicates a shift in the way we use desktop and mobile devices in the very near future. Cheers !

"A “personal computer” seems a pretty good definition for the iPad, all in all" ....it's is amazing, imagine that. Windows 8 looks way beyond iOS as a all around OS across form factors. And what does a clearly biased report do ? Brush it off as gives iOS and the iPad 3 the prize again for being the PC killer.....what a twist, what great spin. A few months ago iPad 2 was hailed as "post-PC" and now it's called the PC killer. Sorry, but the biased reports are going to try to mask one of the greatest inefficiencies of the iPad and iOS, the lack of a full OS across form factors.

Check out this statement " Ten years ago computers were relatively
expensive: you had one of them, most likely, not a laptop and a
smartphone and a tablet and maybe a desktop too. Now you can pick up a
laptop for less than a base-level iPad. This isn’t about price, it’s
about functionality and needs." Exactly what will Windows 8 bring again to the market ? I guess having a full windows OS on a tablet means absolutely nothing right ?........I somehow expected this reaction from all loyal Apple paid reviewers. I frankly will not expect an unbiased review of Windows 8.

Apple didn't create the tablet market, but they did help to redefine it by showing that as long as it's easy and fun to use then it can be successful even if otherwise limited.

Also, in addition to the limitation of using a mobile OS like iOS, many tablets are also limited in performance by ARM.

ARM is great for power efficiency and low system build costs but it's still a 32bit architecture that's only starting to developing 64bit and the next gen chips starting to come out now only really rival the aging Intel ATOMs for raw CPU performance.

Meaning all previous offerings provided even less performance and neither the iPad or iPad 2 could provide the kind of performance needed to properly run a desktop OS, let alone higher performance demanding programs.

While new features like Siri require Apple's data servers and is crippled without them. So a lot of the more advance features are actually external services and not an actual feature of the device's hardware performance capabilities.

The differential is whether the product is free for the user to alter and customize outside of the original intended usage model.

Apple tries to restrict user control to the intended usage model. While so called "PC"s allow for less restrictions and more control to the end user.

Also, until recently, iOS products required a regular computer for full usage but iOS itself is still a mobile OS and not as capable as OS X and other desktop OS solutions.

The introduction of Chrome for Android is an example of the industry seeking to blur that last distinction but mobile OS are limited by design and that's hard to over come.

So there are some aspects that distinctions can be made, and is what's actually meant, though otherwise you are correct that any personal computing device can be considered a PC.

A PC means
personal computer as stated in the article and it always been that. A PC is any
computer you use for personal things, no matter the brand or the OS it have; if
it is the computer you use at your work then it is a workstation. Now put a PC
and a workstation side by side and what we get? The same thing with a name that’s
describes its main use. This rule applies to any computer brand. What I don’t understand
why most people want to separate the name Apple from PC when for years before
Apple products use the “i” thing (iMac, iPod…) they were Power PC, even Apple
knows that what they sell are PC’s! I can’t believe I have to explain the
definition of PC on a site like this.

and a workstation side by side and what we get? The same thing with a name that’s
describes its main use. This rule applies to any computer brand. What I don’t understand
why most people want to separate the name Apple from PC when for years before
Apple products use the “i” thing (iMac, iPod…) they were Power PC, even Apple
knows that what they sell are PC’s! I can’t believe I have to explain the
definition of PC on a site like this.

So its an iPad 2 with an HD screen, and better hardware, with the same crap iOS. Yea, PCs aren't going anywhere. Don't get me wrong, iPad will always dominate the tablet market, heck they created it, but iOS limits what you can actually do with it...
