Do some research on benchmarks. With the exception of the excellent Tegra 3 Asus Transformer, all of the dual core Android tablets have not quite measured up to iPad2 in gpu or browser speed. like the review states, the iPad wins in the right areas.
I use my tablets primarily for browsing, email, social andthe occasional app (in that order as do most users), so I encourage and root for the competition. I own 3 different Samsungs, mthe Sony, HP, Playbook and HTC and find that that the iPad is still the most consistent, albeit boring, device. Keyboard, # of freezes, browsing, and audio perform consistently well that that shortcomings rarely stick out. Choppy performance and battery life are much bigger "worries"'when I use the others, with the exception of the Galaxy 7.7.
Unless you own and hae used both, conjecturing based on"tired to hear about Apple" is getting old.

This thing is disappointing for the price.
Pumping out that much money, getting little performance in comparison to many other tablets.

The Transformer 4 Core murdering the iPad, the Galaxy 8.1+ (10.1 and soon 10.1v) simply pumps out much more power at the fraction of the price.

The only reason you're paying another 200, 400 dollars for a weaker, non upgradeable device is simply..

Because it is Apple.

The iPad2 3GS ("iPad2" in this review) really is a nice-to-have device. For various reasons I did not have an original iPad despite wanting one, so this review will focus on the iPad2 and not the differences between the two generations.

1. Screen. The Screen on the iPad2 is gorgeous. HD movies really do look HD, and the iPad2 provides a very satisfactory viewing experience.

2. Battery life: Very good. Despite moderately heavy "on the road" use, I have never managed to run my battery even to 50%. Others are reporting 11-12 hours and this is consistent with what I am seeing. Apple did a good job with this battery, and the overall power management of the iPad2. I have my screen set to auto-dim (where the screen adapts to the lighting in the room) and no doubt this helps. I have never needed or wanted to fiddle with the screen using this setting. Ordinary Apple chargers work fine to charge the iPad2 battery. However, many computer USB ports do not have enough juice to charge the iPad2. My main Windows computer does not; not even from a powered USB hub. Many third-party chargers for the iPhone turn out not to work with the iPad2 although all of the Apple ones I have tried do, and some of the after-market ones do. So far my experience has been that if they sold it in the Apple store, it works.

3. Browsing the web. The iPad2 is peerless for just plain web browsing, and this is what it excels at. The virtual keyboard is OK for short email messages or filling in fields on websites. For more heavy duty typing, there are a number of fine outboard keyboards out there. I was delighted to find that my Apple Bluetooth Keyboard works splendidly with the iPad2 and for road trips I pack it along.

4. Cameras. There are two; front and back. They are exactly what you would expect: OK for quick snapshots, but a lens a fraction of an inch in diameter is not going to take the place of a real camera; we all know that. They work reasonably well for what they are. I have not yet tried the various videophone applications so I cannot speak to that.

The iPad2 is thin and easy to carry. The Apple case, which many people buy, is nice to have, but it does not protect the back of the iPad. There are any number of aftermarket leather or other kinds of
cases that provide the iPad2 with more protection. Most of these will cause the iPad2 to power down when the front flap is closed, just as the Apple cover does. This is a very nice feature.

The iPad2 has infinite professional and personal uses. I can have it in the courtroom (I am an attorney) and look up cases on-line quickly and snappily using the 3GS, since most courtrooms do not provide counsel with Wi-Fi. Email, Web access, etc., these things are all becoming a fundamental part of our lives. I used to use my iPhone for portable Web access, and it was OK for that, but the iPad2 with its larger screen is infinitely better for this. In my life Web access wherever I go is the main use for the iPad2, and it is a critical use.

My main negative on the iPad2 are these: 1. No dedicated USB2 port. Why not? 2. The lack of a USB port makes it very difficult to print anything with the iPad2 and for some reason Apple does not make printing easy, or hardly even possible. Apple flat-out does not encourage or want its iPad2 users to print off of their iPads. Whether they are trying to protect their notebook sales or there is some other reason, I do not know. Eventually I anticipate that competition and pressure from the user base (me!) will force Apple to relent on this.

In the 21st century, devices like the iPad2 are destined to become a fundamental part of our personal kit. The iPad2 is beautifully made, and for most of us very much worth having. Highly recommended.

P.S. If you will buy the iPad 2 I suggest you have to check for best price before you decide at: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013FRNKG/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=slashgear.com-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B0013FRNKG

Thanks for such a thorough review. I wonder if the HDMI accessory will work on the iPad 1 even though it was designed for the iPad 2. They both have the same 30 point adapter. It would be interesting to test that out. As you pointed out watching movies through the iPad with the family can be done easily while away from home if the adapter worked.

Since Wal-Mart and Target has a 20% discount on iPad 2, I wanted to buy one. I'm a beginner, so I never had any other iPad. I have more than enough money (I'm 12) to buy it and I have reviewed all it's qualities. I've gone on YouTube as well. I plan on using it as a webcam and a camera.

- You either dont own an iPad or you are very slow at learning how to work with it...
"On iPad you easy get bounced between apps, especially the store to safari and I imagine email to safari. But there is no way to go back without going to home and then opening the app you were using again. Again my android phone way out performs here."
- Yes you can go between aps use four fingers to swipe over the screen and change apps without pressing the home button.
"Finally no flash. My phone has flash, and it's not bad. Definitely way better than no flash. Steve is fighting a stupid war and I certainly hate his product for it."
- Apparently you are here to troll, because I own Droid X and flash on it is nothing but a slideshow with terrible performance that freezes up the whole browser. I understand the need to give the user an option to use it or not... but honestly speaking noone is missing anything by not having flash on the tablet.
- About your complain for the camera... it's again... plain stupid... why would you want a 5 mp camera on a tablet? go and checkout the Xoom reviews, where frames are being dropped due to the high buffer size of the 5MP camera. If I want to take a picture I'll rather use a smaller and more comfortable device with a real sensor and lense.
- About transferring photos, you can email them or upload them wireless using FTP or Flickr...
So again... you either dont own an iPad 2 and you come here as all other trolls, to troll... or you are very slow at learning how to work with devices, in which case I feel sorry for you, but maybe your kids can show you how to work with the iPad.
Best,
Aaron

- You either dont own an iPad or you are very slow at learning how to work with it…
“On iPad you easy get bounced between apps, especially the store to safari and I imagine email to safari. But there is no way to go back without going to home and then opening the app you were using again. Again my android phone way out performs here.”
- Yes you can go between aps use four fingers to swipe over the screen and change apps without pressing the home button.
“Finally no flash. My phone has flash, and it’s not bad. Definitely way better than no flash. Steve is fighting a stupid war and I certainly hate his product for it.”
- Apparently you are here to troll, because I own Droid X and flash on it is nothing but a slideshow with terrible performance that freezes up the whole browser. I understand the need to give the user an option to use it or not… but honestly speaking noone is missing anything by not having flash on the tablet.
- About your complain for the camera… it’s again… plain stupid… why would you want a 5 mp camera on a tablet? go and checkout the Xoom reviews, where frames are being dropped due to the high buffer size of the 5MP camera. If I want to take a picture I’ll rather use a smaller and more comfortable device with a real sensor and lense.
- About transferring photos, you can email them or upload them wireless using FTP or Flickr…
So again… you either dont own an iPad 2 and you come here as all other trolls, to troll… or you are very slow at learning how to work with devices, in which case I feel sorry for you, but maybe your kids can show you how to work with the iPad.
Best,

I have owned the iPad 2 since day one, I also owned the iPad 1 so what I have to say is not just hear say or speculation. I absolutly loved my iPad 1 but there were a few things I didn't care for. First being the lack of cameras and secondly there were a few game apps that were too powerful for it. I also own an iPod touch 4g so I now how amazing the retina display would have been. With that said I loved the iPad especially the 10 hour battery life. Now that I own the iPad2 I am even more impressed by apples innovations and even more happy to be an iPad owner. "Is there really a difference worth noting?", answer : you better believe it! There is nothing like it. It's an amazing product that blew away my expectations. Yes I know what all you negative spectators are saying about the camaras, but the facts are all I wanted the cameras for was face time, any picture or video I wish to take will not be taken with my iPad, even if the iPad cameras were 10 megapixel. I will however use the iPad to share, display and customize all of my data. As for the display, no it's not a retina display, but then again neither is xoom's, not even close. The iPad display is nothing to shake a stick at,especially when it comes to the graphics. So for those of you that are thinking about updating, I say go for it you will defiantly be able to tell the difference and it's all good. For those of you thinking about buying your first, I promise you will absolutely love it. And for all the nay sayers out there I say first don't knock it till you try it, and I mean for more than the minute you spent at best buys display, plus why wait for others to catch up to the standards apple has already set.

Man, I love my iPad2. There is nothing out there like it. It's just so smooth. I love the reader because read a lot of books. And the cameras are great. Apple just "Gets it". They really know how to put a product together and have it work with everything else. I love how the ipad 2 works with my apple tv. Awesome. And never once since I have used the iPad 2 did I go "hmm, I really wished this had flash. No draw backs to this product.
