The Motorola Xoom may have more RAM and better specs than the iPad 2 on paper, but specs alone are only part of the equation. You have to consider the whole package and right now, for instance, if you want a tablet that you can integrate into a pro studio set up, to create music or to control midi equipment or act as a touch screen controller for your DAW etc then even the first iPad is better than any Android tablet at the moment as Android lacks the necessary audio API's in the Android SDK.

The Xoom may technically be better specced but in real world usages it's far from the best.

This article was talking about how the tablet market is progressing so that in 'x' years, we will be able to do much of what is currently done on a PC or laptop. why is it that in every article, on every tech review site, a fight between Android and Apple always breaks out.

I own an HTC Desire, just pre ordered the incredible S and i have just pre ordered a motorola xoom. I'm no Apple fan, Android is the way to go for me, but it is really starting to bug me that these arguments happens at the bottom of these articles.

Yes, the author could have mentioned something about the xoom or upcoming/existing Android tabs but unfortunately the iPad is the most recognizable and as far as the majority of the tech community are concerned Apple is making the "leaps and bounds" in functionality (whether that is the case or not).

People should read these articles and see the context more than just seeing who prefers what platform. This is an age old fight that will continue but it is one that will never be won. Both platforms have something that attract different types of people. Android is seen as the 'geeky' brother to iOS and thats fine by me. I'm still pro Android.

isn't this a step backwards?
Motorola Xoom vs iPad 2
Display Resolution
1280 x 800 vs 1024 x 768
Back Camera
5 Megapixels vs 0.92 Megapixels
Front Camera
2 Megapixels vs 0.3 Megapixels
RAM
1 GB vs 256 MB or 512 MB
Wireless
4G vs 3G
If you want 4G you would have to upgrade once again to iPad 3, so isn't buying 1 Xoom tablet still cheaper than upgrading to iPad 2 and upgrading once more to iPad 3?

Did Apple really show us all of this? I'm looking forward to my own hands on time with it... but considering that I've already been enjoying the Xoom for a week, I believe that Android has already shown that very future you speak of... After all, it is the first tablet to feel like the next leap forward in computing. This is made most event in the redesigned user interface and the better browsing experience. This is the 1st mobile device I enjoy browsing on more than my laptop! And yes, I've had an I pad since October!

I'm likely to trade my old ipad for an ipad2, but only b/c I have so much iTunes content :-(

It's the software potential on these devices that should get us excited. Hardware advancements exist for software to get better and take advantage....

You are absolutely right: the Xoom's one and only, regrettably fatal flaw, seems to be the exorbitant price.

I wouldn't give anyone props for "utter domination and obliteration" -- we all lose from that as consumers. I'd rather pay a premium price but buy a product that's different from the mainstream and provides an alternative.

Too bad Nokia went to the dogs and never produced the sequel to their NIT series... But there are plenty of options out there, and if RIM manage to deliver a tablet capable of running Android apps, they may have a very strong contender for the crown.

So based on the 'droid fanbois here the iPad is already dead.
Not from what I see, the so called tablet market is really the iPad market and some copy cats.

This is the second version of the iPad, where are all the vaporwares we have been hearing about since ballmer talked about them 14 months ago?

So when some one actually ships a tablet that can compete I'll go look at it, if it's better I'll buy it, I want the best tablet at any reasonable price. Saving 50 or 100$ makes no sense if you are not getting the best.

So far best = iPad. The sales numbers support thus, but again, it is easy to have the numbers when you are the only one in the race.

Not from what I see, the so called tablet market is really the iPad market and some copy cats.

This is the second version of the iPad, where are all the vaporwares we have been hearing about since ballmer talked about them 14 months ago?

"until you thought you were awesome at the end there."

I have no idea what planet that's from or what you're talking about.

Xoom is what price? Check out liliputing's recent tablet poll. Galaxy Tab syndrome is what I foresee in the future of the Xoom and similar premium tablets. Did you miss the price slash on the iPad 1? You think the Xoom looks fantastic now?

That poll Brad did proves one thing. People don't give 2 shits (sorry about swearing but it's fun) about $800 tablets. I think it's funny that the iPad 2 meant that even more people will buy iPads because the ver 1.0 is now price slashed further making the Xoom's of the world look like a bunch of jackasses.

PS. I own zero Apple products. Fully props to them though on this utter domination and obliteration.

Outside of Apple, this market consists of who and what exactly? Last time I checked the Samsung Galaxy Tab sucked. Sales back that up. Why the fire sale? We know why.

I don't doubt the genius of the iPad. It's the iPad and not tablets in general. Right now this "market" is nothing but wishful thinking. Touchscreens have been around for years right? When did people flock to them? The time Apple released the iPad. Getting lumped into this tablet market seems to be ebook readers. No doubt tablet buyers may be mainly buying for reading. That's fine. Also remember that magazines and newspapers, in other words big business want and need tablet/ebook readers to take off. Their future depends on it. They have the ability to throw shitloads of money at this and like most people they are sheep. A shitty movie is a great movie if there is a great ad campaign.

Peace. Out.

Honestly, I saw absolutely no major advancement here. Software that is actually productive on tablets is still lacking in both quantitiy and quality in comparison to desktop apps and adding a couple of apps is not a major advancement at all. This was a lackluster launch of a device by any standard.

The device is lighter than the original, but its specs (including weight) are going to be outclassed in just a couple of weeks by the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and may be outclassed in specs by several other tablets coming down the pike in the next 2-3 months from Gigabyte and others.

We'll see what the others bring to the table soon enough.

I'm sure you authors know I'm not exactly partial to Apple products, despite the fact that I'm a big OS X fan, and have owned several Apple products. That being said, I really want to upgrade my iPad to an iPad 2. The specs are not impressive. Dual core 1Ghz+ chips, 512mb Ram (minimum), 2 cameras, etc. are all standard fare for tablet specs.

BUT, it's goddamn sexy. Skinny, and lighter! (big issue for me, iPad and Xoom are both overweight for their function). Garageband is pretty awesome too, although I know that doesn't apply to everyone.

The most important thing about the iPad 2, is that it breaks the horrible Apple mold of pricing. It's the CHEAPEST premium tablet on the market. Really? An Apple product, being the CHEAPEST? granted 499 gets you the non 3G 16gb, but still, the point is they have a 499 price point that has all the same core specs. I'm really rooting for honeycomb tablets to take off, but I honestly don't see that happening unless they can penetrate the iPad market. Which means they have to offer more for less.

iOS is still somewhat painful to use on a tablet. You always wish you could just.. do.. more. But if it's one thing I credit Apple with, is software innovation. I'm hoping they'll come around and recognize the need to separate a mobile OS from a tablet OS.
