Well that, and a calendar on the lock screen, and location based reminders. Turns out, lock screen only shows reminders, not the calendar. And location based reminders only work with iCloud, not with exchange. Great..

Sigh. You’re working awfully hard to create hypotheticals that will shoehorn this into a bait and switch. Even under the circumstances you’ve described, it’s not a bait and switch since Apple didn’t entice you to buy one thing and then attempt to remove and replace it with a more expensive item. Now you could be claiming some sort of fraud or false advertising, but I doubt that would fly with regard to a refurbished model.

In any case, we’re parsing this to death. I’m not saying that what Apple did was right. I’m just saying that bait and switch was the wrong way to describe it.

what if i had purchased a used/refurbished ipad 1 recently because i found the new features of iOS5 attractive but either couldn’t afford an ipad 2 or work in a place that doesn’t allow devices with cameras?

You must be thinking of a different Apple than me. I can’t think of a recent Apple product that didn’t include completely arbitrary software enhancements that weren’t backported to the more than capable previous devices.

Except Im sure they have some sort of disclaimer waiving any liability from “typographical errors”, saying they use best endeavours to ensure that documentation is technically correct and accurate, blah blah blah, etc etc.

They all do it, its legal 101, you’ll get nothing by trying to call them up on it as we already see – they are removing forum posts and amending documentation as required and where possible.

Unless there was major consumer deception here, i.e. people bought the product in anticipation of having this feature (which has already been pointed out – they didnt), its going to be a case of “sorry, we made an oopsie.”

Maybe if we are lucky they will introduce it in a future release if enough people complain/ask for it – just like they did by restoring rotation lock as an option for the side switch on the original iPad. They cant exactly claim its no possible because with a hack it “seemed to work”. But hey, this is Apple…

Why should I buy an iPad 2 when my iPad 1 was working fine with the multi-gestures on 4.3 before my upgrade to iOS 5?
I hope apple don’t think that this will force me to upgrade to an iPad 2, instead it will push people to jail break :(

Actually, I think we will see multi-gestures appear on the iPad 1 in iOS 5. Yes, I do live in hope.

I have an iPAD 1 and this was the one Feature why I eagerly waited for the release of iOS5. Just to find out that it is not working. That’s really annoying.

I think that the point here is that the way to continue to use the device as we’ve become accustomed to as developers who were testing the multitasking gestures in our apps which flows through to our use of our personal devices on the platform personally is to upgrade to iPad 2.

Given our personal experience with the feature, it doesn’t sit right for Apple to suggest that there’s any hardware reason to not have a UI in the Settings App to allow the user to enable the gestures if they are accustomed to them and are happy to continue testing them.

I don’t think you understand the meaning of the term “bait & switch”: “Bait-and-switch is a form of fraud, most commonly used in retail sales but also applicable to other contexts. First, customers are “baited” by advertising for a product or service at a low price; second, the customers discover that the advertised good is not available and are “switched” to a costlier product.”

No one was “switched” to a costlier product.

We were baited by a video earlier this year that demonstrated the forthcoming gestures. Very shortly after, a developer showed how to implement the feature on iPad 1 running iOS 4.x with a simple hack (no jailbreking required). After using this nice feature for several months is it not unreasonable to expect it in iOS 5? The switch is that we did not get it on the iPad 1 even though the device is perfectly capable.

My device will stay at 4.x, thank you Apple. Bait and switch it is The fact that the “upgrade” is free is not relevant.

For original iPad owners:
Go in to the accessiability setting and turn on touch assist
It’s kind of like the gestures where as you don’t need to use the home button to close an app or bring up multitasking

One thing apple has always been good at is creating longevity in their products through good software. I’ve rarely felt like I was missing out for not buying the latest whatever every year.

The really dirty and disappointing part of this is that until yesterday the U.S. apple site said the same as the UK version. It seems that they are trying to cover up what they originally advertised in response the complaints. This really dings my trust in apple.

I just downgraded to 4.3.5. I use the gestures that much.

Yes, I am frustrated…I upgraded my iPad1 to ios5 because I could not wait to finally use
the MULTITASKING GESTURES.
I wrote to Apple about it…. yes, THEY ARE WRONG for false advertising!
I hope they reconsider adding the MTG for iPad1 because it worked on 4.3 just fine.
I keep swiping my fingers on my iPad screen…. habits are hard to break once you get used to swiping.

Not trying to defend Apple but I am trying to criticize the headline of this article. How is this “bait and switch?” The iPad owners already owned their devices so they expended no money. The iOS 5 update was free. They may WISH that their devices had more added functionality but they weren’t “lured” into taking any action or spending any money.

I’m probably just tilting at windmills. It was naive of me to expect the headline to be accurate or even for it to have any connection to the underlying story at all.

I just started upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS 5 and I copied the iPhone Release Notes. It looks like Apple forgot to update the iPhone Release Notes. It says this in the iPhone Release Notes about the iPad:

Multitasking Gestures for iPad
   Use four or five fingers to pinch to the Home Screen
   Swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar
   Swipe left or right to switch between apps

I got excited reading this, so i went to my iPad 1 that I upgraded yesterday to iOS 5 and these features don’t work.

The bullet above that one in the release notes says AirPlay Mirroring for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. Note that is calls out iPad 2 in that bullet, but only says iPad in the Multitasking bullet. This implies that it should work in both. C’MON Apple!

Hey Thanks for the heads up. I think I will refrain from upgrading my iPad for now… well, at least until I know that these issues have been resolved. I view Podcasts all the time, and I heavily rely on the “Get More Episodes” button…

Another iOS 5 iPad annoyance: Podcasts. The new music player makes you drill down further to get to your podcasts. Why can’t you edit/sort the button layout like you can on iPhone and iPod Touch??? Podcasts are a big deal and they bury it like nobody uses them. And what happened to the “get more episodes” button on podcasts? Seems now I have to manually go to itunes and search for the podcast I want even though I already had a previous episode. I really hope I am missing a setting or option here because it’s beyond me how they could make that change.
