Steve, there are serious overload issues on the Apple servers. I suspect they have temporarily shut off access to new downloads until traffic evens out. Go out & have a hamburger and try tomorrow!

The update process is juggling between 5 hours and 3 hours for a 716.1MB download. PS: My download bandwidth is 50Mbps, apple servers are pretty slow or in other words limiting the speed for each peer to a particular speed.

It turned out to only take about 15 minutes for my download and that included all of the phone restarts. (Using Time Warner Road Runner with Turbo Boost and my home network). What is taking extra time though is the restoration of my Apps- anyone else having the problem where the computer screen says that is is Restoring the Apps but the phone says that everything is complete- oddly though, some of my Apps aren’t appearing on my phone, so….

if you have the 8gb “third gen” touch, it’s not really third gen. there was never a 3rd gen 8gb, they just kept the 2nd gen model. you won’t be able to upgrade if this is the case!

Hooray! iOS 5 has finished downloading in the estimated 5 minutes I was initially told. A lot of you all must be downloading using some ancient connections — 56K dial-up or DSL — because I don’t know how it’s taking a lot of you all hours or days to get this downloaded. All I have is FiOS and not even the fastest bandwidth. Sucks for you all I guess. Welcome iOS 5!
