Tim Berners-Lee, I respect you opinion. I disagree with the premise that sites silo-ing huge amounts of humanity's data is a bad thing though. No complaints when the library of congress preserves all the works of mankind eh? As for any service provider or website collecting data with the intent of capitalizing on that data, well that is free capitalism.

Chris Burns, your reporting forgot to mention Apple is also collecting a major silo of data (iCloud, iTunes, iPhone, iBooks, etc..) providing services to hundreds of millions of iOS patrons as well. But then again Apple can do no wrong as the popular rich kid. For that matter, read the legal-eeze in EULAS from all social and sharing sites; they all, in no short terms, say you (the agreeing customer) have no legal right to anything you shared or uploaded. This includes texts, photos, videos, documents, comments, geo-tags, whatever.
