They should offer 2 different OS's. Microsoft Windows 8 for traditional environments and Microsoft Metro for mobile environments.

I agree 100% that there is no reason for what MS is doing. They could have made this much simpler and much less confusing.

MS is gambling the future of their 92% desktop market share in order to break into the tablet market, of which they currently have 0% share.

It is complicated because like it or not you will have to work in both.

As much as I would like to work solely in the desktop mode, you have to use Metro for many control options, power options, program installations, searches, etc.

I agree with jescott418...there is absolutely no reason to have multiple environments on the same machine at the same time...none. Mainly, it just makes for a poor user experience, but there are other problems.

Think of it this way. The two environments are so incongruous that even MS can't seamlessly integrate them, as exemplified by IE10. The two don't even work together. Bookmark a site in desktop mode, and it's not there in Metro mode. Pin a site in Metro, and it never shows in desktop. Now you're going to have to remember which version of the same browser you were using. This is most definitely a step in the wrong direction.

People who like to "play around" with computers and the OS will love Win 8. But people who just want to use a computer for normal operations should stick with Windows 7. I know I will.

MS do not have the Apple environment to work within; the WP7 phones have not sold well so far, and hence the zillions of desktop PC users will take some shifting away from their comfort zone.
The MS strategy requires a wholistic change within their market, with a dependency on the WP phones flooding the market is significant volumes.
This does not look like it's going to happen any time soon, despite MS throwing millions at the WP project.
Poor OS software/firmware on some of the latest phone products has killed the sales of these devices.

microsoft should have either:

A) made metro tablet-only, or
B) made it optional on the desktop!

the idea of trying to get my head around this new nonsense makes me want to scream. i might eat my hat and start recommending macs: when one system works, and the other doesn't, it's no longer a case of macs merely being overpriced PCs.

Seriously...the more I use the apps the less I need the browser. Funny how Google is making a play for browser based chromebooks trying to make the PC obsolete, but MS might have realize "there's an app for that". Hence, bringing PC back into it's former glory. My prediction is net browser less needed and apps taking full reign....Apple figured this out years ago.

Not a fan of Windows 8 or the two versions of IE 10. Why in the world did Microsoft put two versions of IE 10 that work totally different in Windows 8? If every browser will end up doing this its going to be very confusing to many. If Microsoft would have created a better way to switch between the two versions it might have been more accepted. Right now I just find Windows 8 being two different operating formats trying to work together and not doing it very well.
