Intel 32nm Medfield SoC leaks with specs and benchmarks

There's something about the brains of the machines we work with that makes us think really hard about how long it'll be before they take over the earth – today we get to peek at Intel's newest effort moving that plan forward with their 32nm process Medfield System on Chip, leaked here in both specifications and benchmarks. What you'll be seeing here is the next processor set made for the mobile market, here made for smartphones and tablets galore more than likely inside 2012. You'll find, thanks to VR-Zone, that this Medfield SoC takes the competition in NVIDIA's Tegra 2 and Qualcomm's Snapdragon MSM8260 and slams their faces into the wall – of course that's not all that happens in the fight.

In this leak comes a 10.1 inch 1280x800 pixel resolution reference tablet which looks rather plain but runs an x86 processing core at 1.6GHz with 1GB of RAM as well as Bluetooth, Wi-fi, and FM radio. This tablet is put through some benchmark tests including Caffeinemark 3. The Tegra 2 scored 7,500, the Snapdragon pulled an 8,000, and the Atom scored a 10,500. Surely the higher clocking had more than a little bit to do with it, but still we're looking at an interesting machine to be sure. Power consumption, on the other hand, appears to be quite high at this early point, using 2.6 W up to 3.6 W with a heavy load.

This of course all works on Android 3.0 Honeycomb while the first final product will be working with Ice Cream Sandwich, and all of the hardware is still at a relatively early stage. You'll find that whatever Intel's chip ends up landing in for its first showing will be more than impressive for the launch. Meanwhile we'll be sitting pretty with our current most powerful chip, the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core SoC on the Transformer Prime. Details are sure to flow on this upcoming Intel masterpiece at CES 2012.
