Instagram's new Layout app arrives for your collages

Instagram is great for scrolling through a seemingly endless array of pics from folks all over the globe, but single snaps sometimes fail to tell the entire narrative. Collages can do a much better job of that, which is probably why Instagram is introducing Layout. The new app lets you cobble together multiple shots into one image, taken from your camera roll. Instagram has some custom layouts ready for you, and a facial detection algorithm that will make piecing pics of friends together much easier.

Once you've placed pics in a collage layout, Instagram is giving you a lot of control. Via their blog post:

Drag and drop photos to rearrange them, pinch to zoom or pull the sides of each photo to adjust its size and get your layout just right. Then flip and rotate your photos to create cool arrangements and mirror effects

For more spontaneous collage making, Instagram has a photo booth feature that sets a timer while you strike a pose. Once pics are snapped, they go straight into your collage.

Though they don't say as much, we'd assume your collage can be fed into Instagram proper manually, should you feel the need. The language of the post suggests your collage is one image, which would be just fine for Instagram.

Like so many apps, Layout is currently available for iOS. Instagram says it will come to Android "in the coming months", though they didn't give themselves a timeframe we could look towards.
