Ok, lets say that it does come down to shortcomings on Apple’s engineers with the reception issues…but you don’t have to buy it. From personal experience, I’m fortunate that my iphone 4 is working properly. If I had problems like some users are having I would return it ASAP.

Surely with all of this vigorous testing they became aware of the problem and failed to convince management.

i have an iphone 4 that works great with no reception issues…if you have problems with the 4, don’t buy it. if you have problems and you currently have the 4, return the undamaged iphone within 30 days, right. it’s hard to please people. if they don’t have the phone, they complain, if you return the phone, they complain. just find another phone then…

there is this thought at the back of my mind that everything we see here was staged…
they could have hired those 40 engineers, physicists, electromagnetic specialists and other experts when they posted that antenna engineer, or something, job advertisement a month ago. with plenty of people, they could have set up those anechoic chambers in a week or so…
and where is the part where the employee holds the ‘wrong way’?
or when the employee holds the phone with his left hand because his right hand has to do something like write, or open the car door, or puff a smoke?
i mean, in my opinion, holding the iPhone 4 the ‘wrong way’ is the right way to hold a phone, any phone, while talking.. you don’t grab the back side of the phone (to cover the antenna) you grip it along it’s edges…

I was going to ask if this lab and staff were responsible for the antenna design on the iPhone 4 or the wi-fi issue at the big press event, but I see all that money spent and all that technology looking so “cool” that I just can’t bring myself to ask those questions… Oh, but didn’t the reporter who was being given the tour?

However, I figured there isn’t a problem with the iPhone 4′s reception, so free bumpers to all! ;p

This is why I’m looking for another phone manufacturer. That I have invested in apps isn’t going to stop me from moving along.

Reading your last paragraph, I am made to wonder the following. What if the antenna structure and shape had not been externally visible. Perhaps this issue would have come to light later and with less bad press for apple.

Regarding Slash Gear writers potential bias towards apple:
It is a blog, and IMO blogs should be opinionated. What is wrong with shamelessly expressing bias?

With everything looking so neat and clean, I wouldn’t be surprised if, during testing, their engineers have to wear special suits and latex gloves. Oh, wait…

It’s a shame that such a huge investment in test labs has gone to waste.
