I subscribe to lots of different tech websites, and follow many on Facebook.. including Slashgear. What i cannot understand is how angry and judgmental people get when they read a simple opinion piece about some new tech or new tech idea! Great article Chris, i found this, and others on the topic, to be very interesting reads!

Im interested to see how cheap tablets will get in the future, and by that i mean.. tablets with a very simple setup running a 1ghz single core or something like that! Considering the fact that tablets have moved past that and onto quad core setups i expect the single core and even dual core prices to begin to drop rapidly!

i wonder about this powerful guy , ‘sibal’ . he wanted the exams systems abolished and he did that in a single swoop. No one opposed. its created a mess of the schooling system… now he wants to give tablets to students to do what? study/ or check facebook? i am waiting for my next purchase bills are going to have a tablet surcharge to offset this expnse by govt.

This is a cheap mischief done by the Indian Politician, first you take out the basic rights of children , deny them the basic infrastructure of education, banish the teachers from teaching by asking them to do menial jobs , then hire a consultant who will waste tax payers money on some junk product and make tall claims on good which no other country would purchase & on top of that make a “Vision 2020 statement of Making India a super power” …utter non-sense !!!!

one thing to remember about the manufacturing contracts in India is that the amount of bribes you give to the whole of the government machine from the ministers to the toilet cleaner.. Nothing will remain for the manufacturer to build.. Just buy it off China and deliver probably..

keep in mind this is for students who have basically nothing; not an american, european, or chinese person who has plenty of money to blow on the latest gadgets. if they can surf basic web sites with it I think it’s done what it was made for.

The problem with the tablet is

(a) Same spec or better spec devices are available from Chinese vendors even as of today — just search for android tablet on alibaba or aliexpress and there are many below $30 range!

(b) When this tablet is manufactured for a bulk confirmed order, the manufacturer can give better pricing for the product. Now, even after the bulk order of 100,000 pieces for the first lot and a commitment for a few million in future, there seems hardly any innovation in pushing the boundaries to get a product with good specifications at the price point.

(c) If bad quality is tolerable just because it is Rs. 1750 or $35, then why even bother creating this “project” of world’s cheapest tablet. The “cheap” tablets were always available from Chinese vendors for a lot cheaper than what we are getting from the DataWind guys anyways.

The thought is nice but the execution is crap. lets face it Android 2.2 runs like crap on such low specs. I should know, I have a first gen Moto Droid with higher specs than that which is has a ton of lag on the same version of android. add to that a resistive screen instead of a capacitive one and you have a slow user experience with crappy input sensitivity. What usage do they expect students to give this thing? At best, the only use I can see is to use these tablets as a means to provide students with elaborate and up to date textbooks cheaply (as downloads for the device) – in other words, as a book reader like a nook. Beyond that it pretty much seem to be crap and students won’t be learning much unless they develop an active hacking community for the hardware and software.

why are you so worried mister “writer” it’s only 1750 in Indian rupees even if it breaks what’s the big deal. You will not even get a substandard Chinease touchscreen phone for that price.
