"Optimal performance"?

Thanks Apple, but don't do me any quality control favors that make my nice HD camera useless and your phone the video camera of choice. For me, this sucks extra bad since often my travel is for work related video shoots and the iPad version of iMovie would have saved me from dragging a laptop along.

I was on the bleeding edge over five years ago when I bought a Sanyo camcorder that saved video to SD cards. The camera takes great HD video but I never have the damn thing with me when the need arises. My iPhone 4 is always with me and the quality is almost as good in general and sometimes better than the Sanyo. It's become my first option for video recording. So, no, I don't have any problems with clip compatibility on iMovie.
