I was a Nintendo fanboy in the 80s and 90s.
I've grown up. Now, I'd rather game on my PC.

Why? Well because I grew out of Nintendo's target audience.

That's why you won't see me bitch about having crap games with crap controls on a crap console with crappy resolution. My opinions make me chose products that satisfy me.

This way I'm not consuming stuff that does not fit what I like, AND WRITE LOUSY ARTICLES ABOUT IT.

Just curious,

"The gaming market is changing, but Nintendo seems to have been most resistant to that change."

Nintendo was years ahead of everyone in motion controlled gaming (and still is if you ask me). They hit the nail on the head with the Wii... One of if not the biggest changes in the industry and now you are saying they are resistant to change ?

HD is the only thing Nintendo has been hesitant (not resistant) to do... That has nothing to do with controls...

I think first person shooters are boring anymore... Too many companies release their games in first person and it is like playing the same games over and over. Third person games offer more versatility to what can be done in the game. I like Nintendo's new Metroid game, Other M and how it combines first and third person point of view and I think more games should follow this perspective...

Having owned all 3 current gen game systems at one time or another, I can honestly say Nintendo isn't the only company facing this enigma right now. We have been doing "3d" games now for over 15 years, we have seen just about every genre you can imagine done 100 times over. I have to agree that the Wii Remote is a gimick at times, but at other times it adds more to the gameplay. Looking at Sony, they didn't change their controller for 3 generations, yes, it's nice, but it's just not enough for a lot of gamers. As for Nintendo, they seem to be the only gaming company willing to take risks with new controls, and ideas, that is what keeps bringing gamers back to them and pushing the game industry as a whole forward. Even if they aren't bringing new ip for us all to enjoy, they do keep the current one's pretty fresh. I just have high hopes for the 3DS and the next N console coming in the next few years.

Now that makes more sense, he should have elaborated on the problems he sees. Sadly though, most people will pass similar judgements on explanations just as vague. While Nintendo has always said its about gameplay and not graphics, as much as it does not suit Nintendo, HDTV is standard now, and they must adapt for the change. Additionally, Nintendo must realize that motion controls, while nice, serve a better as a SUPPLEMENTAL control scheme rather than a primary one.

Nintendo's overly saturated statistics may tell a different story, but if they wish to remain competitive, they've got big changes to make.

This isn't a very fully fleshed out article. You complain about Nintendo's output but only discuss two games, SMG2, which until now I thought everyone in the world loved except me, and DKCR, which I thought was brilliantly designed and really liked the control scheme for (I wish you were specific about your objections).

On the other hand, I have to admit that I haven't really been impressed by that many Nintendo games of late. I like the Wii, but at the same time I think Nintendo was putting out a higher number of quality titles in the years before they introduced the Wii. I'm not saying that's the reason, but that does seem to be the time line.

And to other commenters, saying things like, "you're wrong because these games sold well" is a really lame argument.

You need to find an opinion and stick with it not flip-flop every few months. First you said all motion gaming was dead, but you had high hopes for Kinect. Then you said everything outside of motion gaming sucked. Then it was motion gaming and normal gaming were equally good. Then you said Kinect was going to fail and Nintendo was all you needed. After that all game systems are equaling good, then Nintendo sucks, then they all are good, now it's Nintendo's controls suck. Please make up your mind.

I think, when it comes down to it; Nintendo makes games for kids first, adults second. Nintendo usually rules the roost with the younger generation, not so much as the kids get older and want a more visual experience. Nintendo doesn't care about HD, an adult want, not a kids, and have limited games supporting real multi-player, like the way adults want it. I can't say that outlook is a bad thing, they are obviously successful marketing to the younger generation, but for the adult crowd Nintendo just doesn't get the job done for me. I need more and I need it to look better!!

Well, I'm actually enjoying more of what the WiiWare service is coming up with for games at the moment.

Wiiware has taken some stick in the past but now developers are really starting to push the quality of games for the service.

This year has been great with titles like 'Rage of the Gladiator' 'Jett Rocket' and 'Pearl Harbor Trilogy'', and with the upcoming 'Fast Racing League' and 'Bomberman 2' I think Wiiware is finally coming up with the goods.

Couldn't care less about Mario personally, I'd rather fund the independents.

The truth is really simple: every person who says that Nintendo needs to change with the player, forgets that they were playing Nintendo when they were kids. And that there's a new generation of kids that are playing kid's games. And I'm pretty sure they're playing Nintendo, you know: the wii is cheap, those franchises go along well with kids, and their parents are happy because they're not hearing shootings and bloodbaths every callof... emm.. every second.

And those new young gamers are right now playing games and enyoing life, not making articles about their personal opinion that doesn't matter to anyone, and bitching about how Mario is still jumping on turtles like a dumb, instead of toasting'em to hell with an Ak-47 and grenades.

I wish all of us could be like'em and be playing whatever we like, instead of posting in the internet.

I think the problem is the fact that Nintendo has been making these games for such a long time. When I go back and replay SMB3 or SMW, and compare them -objectively- to NSMB or NSMB Wii, I can't honestly say that the older games are any better. Nostalgia often clouds judgment on these titles.

Comparing SM64 and SMG is only somewhat different. SMG is (in my opinion) a better game on every objective level. Better graphics, sound, level design, etc. HOWEVER... SM64 was much more advanced *for its time* than SMG. SM64 Was most people's introduction to polygon-based 3D gaming, and is thus remembered more fondly and as more historically significant than SMG ever will be.

Basically, I think the younger generation (well, the ones who don't simply stick to Halo) will appreciate games like SMG, DKCR, and others the same way us older folk regard the old school NES / SNES and even N64 classics.

Basically, I think the younger generation (well, the ones who don’t simply stick to Halo) will appreciate games like SMG, DKCR, and others the same way us older folk regard the old school NES / SNES and even N64 classics.

I agree with this post and it fits my experience perfectly. I too have always been a Nintendo supporter, only owning Nintendo consoles since... ever. I enjoyed the good old 2D games and loved Super Mario 64. But these days I am just board with the games. Sometimes I jusy buy them for the sake of it, collection or series build up. I try them but mostly never accomplish them, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 being one of those. Yes, Nintendo need to advance into more co-op and vs. gameplay over the Internet and work on a mature console that offers HD visuals, CD/DVD playback, hard drive and Mic/Cam chat features online. I am hoping the 3DS will be the starting point for Nintendo.

And i dare you just dare you to attempt to name someone who is better and more influential then the greatest games designer of all time. Nintendo are one of the most hated games companies, and i really cant understand why maybe it just shows you how people are.
How can Nintendo be wrong with their games and/or control schemes, since they sold a lot?

I'm playing videogames for about 20 years and I'm not tired of playing Mario, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Zelda, etc.
SMG IS an excellent game; they know how to push Wii to it's visual limits, making gorgeous scenarios and characters.

I think the controls fit perfectly in game needs... So I can't agree with you, but I know there's a lot of people tired of the same characters, stories, etc.

BUT, being tired doesn't mean that the games are terrible or Nintendo is wrong, you just changed your mind about it.

I agree--the WII controller and poor range from the sensor bar ruin the fun of the system entirely. I use a gamecube controller for vintage games, and watch netflix on the system, but it is bust for anything else!

Let me start by saying...Don Resinger is the last person I respect for anything related to Nintendo or Sony. MS fanboy alert!

With that said, Nintendo is the best game company on planet earth! They have been around the longest and understands what a MAJORITY of people enjoy with their games. Creativity is at the front of that line and Nintendo delivers that in spades. So what they feature many of the most BELOVED characters of all-time? They know which characters will SELL this creativity and each new game in the franchise feels NEW!

I'm about to play DONKEY KONG COUNTRY RETURNS naow! It's more fun than every game NOT made by Nintendo this year!

Have you tried Fluidity/Hydroventure? We made it with Nintendo with careful thought towards the Wii Remote. It's a very broad game, with lots to see and do, and critically, is rather original. Check it out for yourself. I think you may be surprised.

I think having the third best rating of all time for a game, which Super Mario Galaxy 2 has, would mean the author should clearly state what he DIDN'T like about the controls...and not just a vague, "tired use of the Wii Remote", because according to the majority of reviews by his peers, he's in the minority on this one.

I just thought his complaints were vague, and not expressed very well.

I definitely see what you are saying, Nintendo games are certainly mildly entertaining. Nintendo truly does need to evolve their strategy a bit if they wish to remain truly competitive and respected amongst serious gamers. There games use to revolutionize gaming. Now, they are oftentimes exactly what we are expecting and steps behind the competition.

CoffeewithGames, while I see where you are coming from, every criticism does not require a solution. If the author knew what Nintendo needed specifically to do to get back on track, that would be miraculous. Creating revolutionary games, something Nintendo must do to get back on track, will take a great deal of effort on Nintendo's part. Ultimately, this is something that Nintendo will benefit from, so it is their responsibility to find the necessary solution, not the author's.

"But that doesn’t mean I don’t have some complaints. And I would like to see Nintendo grow up a bit. The gaming market is changing, but Nintendo seems to have been most resistant to that change."

Writing opinion pieces is fine, but not stating how you wish "...Nintendo would grow up..." makes this just a complaint piece, with no solution.

According to the "professional" game reviews, Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the best Nintendo Wii game released in 2010, and the second best game on the system; and the third best game of all time.

You didn't even state what you didn't like about the Wii Remote controls, just, "...their use of the Wii Remote leaves much to be desired."
Stating WHAT you specifically didn't like, would have given the readers more information, and formed a better overall opinion to agree or not agree with. The one given is just extremely vague, and needs more explaining to actually make sense...unless you are just complaining to complain.
