This reply works for John (below) as well: I saw this ahem, movie last night. People were laughing out loud at it. It was that bad. Yes, I know it's an alien movie so reality doesn't necessarily come into play. But the screenplay was a joke.

Rep.
Robert Goodloe Harper, famous quote, "Millions for defense but not one penny for tribute" is now being rendered by the film community as Millions for CGI, but not one penny for acting or writing.

Everything I've seen about this film seems to make it the poster child for this approach.

For example, we have aliens who can't stand the sun (vampires anyone) yet the command vessels that have windows that can be shot out by the hero. Please! Even our ships are commanded from a battle direction center, deep behind armour.

[Shrug] I guess it will work. Hollywood can't write any more; people can't think. You may kiss the bride.

The bar might have been raised for visual effects with this film, but it was also massively lowered for acting quality, dialogue and plot. Half the thing felt like an advert for the US Navy.

Mr Helman stated: "The post-production times have also shrunk. War of the Worlds was a project I was also working on that was done in 3 months which is was a record – but because of the volume – War of the Worlds was 249 shots of visual effects, where Battleship has like 1,400, with a post-production period of about 8 months which is on the short end of things. Things are changing very quickly.”"

Truth is that War of the Worlds post production had a 3 month overlap with production because of the unique relationship that VFX sup Dennis Muren had with director Steven Spielberg, i.e. a 20+ year relationship. Something not really duplicated with most films. Its been discussed already that the accepted duration of War of the Worlds post production was 6 months at least in contest of how post production is conducted in most films. The continuity of the FICTION that a film with 249 shots at the state of the art of War of the Worlds production time could be done in 3 months has contributed to the continued delinquency of the VFX business model. I know because i heard this from ILM themselves in 2007 while in production fo Transformers 1 AND Pirates of the Carribean 3. How the schedules of those productions were affected by the misrepresented post time of War of the Worlds, and how it was considered the norm (3 months for post production).

These glib statements never factor in the human cost of these shows: the time away from family, the crushing schedule often imposed on the outside vendors of the main shop.

I'd like to read an article someday that tout the technical prowess of a film while proudly stating that people lived a balanced life throughout production and in all ranks. I know the vfx community does good work. I just want it done while they have good lives.

Another example: Avengers cracks one billion in box office. Think they'll pay the 30.5 million in taxpayers money from Mexico and Ohio any share of the profit that was used in the budget? nope.

Slashgear, please write me a story of a vfx film that can make a profitable movie without needing to suckle tax payer's money to get their film done, Don't get me started on the "Globalization" part. Think Foxcomm but for VFX….
