Yes - cable companies charge waaaaaay too much. But the alternative is to unsubscribe, not to steal. I cut the cable years ago. They didn't rob me, they just raised their prices beyond my pain threshold.

The big problem is the way content is packaged. Having 200+ channels, including all the crap no one really wants, for $75/month is partially due to how the content is sold to the cable and dish companies. Using the previous example, the consumer would much rather pick-and-choose channels ala cart for $0.38 / channel / month - but it's just not going to happen under the current system. The NFL channel costs the cable/dish provider more than Ion channel. Reasonable ala cart pricing for consumers would substantially reduce the overall revenue for cable/dish providers and add complexity to their service, so there's no incentive for them to fight for it.

I'm no apologist for cable/dish companies. The whole system is rigged from the content producers to the content delivery companies to extract as much money out of our pockets as possible. But when you sign up for a service, no one's robbing you and you don't have the right to steal from them.

Movies like "The Fighter" and "Toy Story 3" are not really so much a result of Netflix as Netflix's agreement with Starz. Which Starz is ending come this February. Netflix messed up, and is finding out the hard way just how badly they messed up. 7.99 is fine if I have access to all their content, but for 6.50 a month I can get nearly all the same content using amazon prime.

"But let’s just say that you’re someone who isn’t so enthusiastic about Netflix. Let’s say that you only like a few of the shows on the service, and every now and then you’ll turn Netflix on to watch an old movie. Although you might wish to see more, wouldn’t you agree that for just $7.99 per month, it’s worth it to keep Netflix?"

No.
Because every time I turn on to watch an old movie, Netflix doesn't have it on streaming. I spent more time feeling frustrated by their lack of content than I did watching anything on Netflix. Better off spending that $8/month on the lottery. Better chances there than finding anything you want on Netflix.

All good points vertical2010! I've been Netflix customer for several years and frankly was one of their biggest fans--until I started using other streaming services. While Netflix is still one of the most economical services out there today--many of us are willing to pay more for fresh new content and there are plenty of fresh new content streaming alternatives--the best of which is Vudu.A word to Netflix...all "we" want is for you to add fresh new HD content to your library and "we" are willing to pay!!You don't have to reorganize, you don't have to keep apologizing because you are trying to figure out how to increase your profit. Just add another pay-per-view tier. I recently paid $8.99 to see a movie on Vudu that was still in theaters--wow! I was happy to pay the $8.99 from the comfort of my coach. So there you go Netflix...Add a pay-per-view tier with all the latest hits and watch the customers come running!

Sounds like the author hasn't researched many alternatives. Much of what is available on Netflix is available free elsewhere (HULU, Amazon, Crackle), and much of what is not available (e.g., recent releases) is available in HD streaming (VUDU) for a one-time viewing fee.

Had been a Netflix customer for several years until Reed Hastings decided to tell us what he really thought of his customers (hit the road..we really don't care). Took him up on his offer and haven't missed it. Had already watched anything worth watching and they hardly ever had any new content. So yes, $7.99 is too much when I can spend that elsewhere for better streaming content. Also now get the occasional disc from Redbox without any monthly subscription charges.

My son downloaded Blindside and I got a warning notification from my cable provider stating an illegal movie was downloaded to my IP. For the price a chicken value meal at Wendy’s, I’d rather be legit as much as possible.

Ok but people including myself, still feel that its not worth it. With Starz and Sony (i think) pulling their library out of Netflix line up, is not helping. The thing is....Netflix tried to pull one too many changes on their customers and didnt have a good enough reason for an explanation. Price changes, plan changes, and name changes are huge. They definitely should not be done all in one swoop.

We ditched ours a few months ago too. We only did the streaming thing. My two complaints were with the selection of shows, and the selection of (streaming) movies. There were a few shows I would watch, but really haven't had time for, thanks to school for everyone in the house. Recent movie releases are (or were) almost nonexistent, though there were several B-Movies named something close to the bigger hits for those not paying close enough attention to the names. And several of the slightly older movies that we haven't seen were available, but *only* on DVD.

Now that Discovery might be in the loop, I might reconsider. We only use basic cable (to get cable internet), which includes locals in HD too. That's still a lot of channels, with several of the big networks in HD. But my Discovery channels are SD, and if their shows are available in HD on Netflix, I might sign up again. When we do watch tv, DSC's stuff is about 1/3 of it.

great for the price but like most users, the selection is pretty thin when you run out...

there is not much new selection. I have watched 3 movies in three months, so I am paying 8 per movie which isn't great value...I used to try to balance it with 4 DVD per month but that's gone. If you haven't seen many movies then its worth it, but for most it loses its value quickly

Netflix is a million times better than having a TV full of junk programs and advertisements. Or sat/cable costing $60+
Nothing beats being able to watch whatever you want, whenever you want for $7.99 a month. There is a ton of good content - I have no idea what shows/movies are not on netflix that everyone seems to want.

However amazon video on demand is getting stronger. I've been watching shows recently on that instead of netflix as I have a prime membership anyway. Netflix is more stable though and works better on tablets. Wider choice as well of movies.

Netflix actually did me a favour in the end. I ditched the dvds and now save $$$.

So my family has been 100% streaming from Netflix for the last 3+ years, we ditched all cable and sat. Don't even have bunny ears. In the last year I added Hulu+ to the mix. There is more than enough content to keep everyone in the house entertained. Granted we only watch about an hour or 2 of TV per day as the kids are doing homework or reading most of the time but during dinner and for about an hour after dinner every night we have plenty of viewing options. Considering most of my friends and co-workers are paying $100+/month for their TV packages I feel like I am getting a great deal, even after shelling out an extra $10-15 for some first run content from Amazon Video. I'm not sure how much TV you people are consuming, but sheesh for the cost of a normal morning starbucks run I get a whole month of TV. Have any of you ever considered getting some work or studying done? Turn off the TV.

It depends. Once you've viewed what you want, the rest is junk and 'new-arrivals' are fairly non-existent. Personally, I turned off streaming and kept the minimum disc rental with the blueray option. It's a great way to queue up the blueray discs you'd like to watch -- not much good for anything else though.

It all depends on how much you watch IMO. I use it a few times a week and only for maybe an hour each time. To me, that's more than worth it. The people who use it less might take issue with it and the people who use it so much that they run out of stuff to watch might think differently.
For me, it's got enough to keep me entertained and is a bargain at $8 a month.

I live in the sticks, literally. I have a DirecTV dish and a 3Mb DSL link (that gets about 2.4 on a good day)

Also have a Samsung BR player with NetFlix and Hulu + clients.

We get DVD and streaming from NetFlix and streaming from Hulu. Total cost is less than $30 a month.

For us, this is a bargain. A 30 mile round trip to the nearest Red Box actually costs about $5, assuming they have what we want and it isn't so scratched my player pukes.
