“for no apparent reason”? How about “the moon would be an ideal opportunity for mining”? That’s lifted right from the article you are supposedly commenting on. There are trillions of dollars of resources on the moon just waiting for whatever entity has the vision to go and get it. Mining the moon could fix our economy PERMANENTLY! It could also supply the Earth’s energy needs, also PERMANENTLY! The moon is abundant in helium 3 which is our best chance at nuclear fusion. Helium 3 is rare on Earth. Mining this isotope is reason enough to fund a permanent moon base (http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/space/moon-mars/1283056). The problem with people like you, Yakuzagang5, is that you think that the government can do something about the economy. If it could, actively fix the economy, tell me, why hasn’t it been done? The reason is the economy works best when government stays out of it. What government is good at, is providing infrastructure, like the ability to travel to the moon and a base from which to mine. Let the private sector do the actual mining, paying the government for “claims” much like what is done now for mineral rights on government land now. The rest will take care of itself.

Ok, I’m a little more conservative than liberal, but for the party who has been whining about the budget every day for the past year or so to have one of their potential candidates say he wants to spend in the order of tens, even hundreds of billions to colonize the Moon? Stupid.

I don’t give two shits what you are, Liberal, Conservative, Libertarian, Gay, Left, Right, Center, Straight, but if you’re elected to Government, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE DAMN ECONOMY FIRST, and fix the education system, and fix poverty. There are more important things right now than colonizing the Moon for no apparent reason. I’m all for the space program, but this is absurd.
