I don’t really agree. Tell me why I can’t since last christmas fina one apple tv in the stores, I snatched one before christmas for my son and now can’t find one. the device is difinately in demand.

AirPlay… HTC charges like $50 for an hdmi cable.. consider this an uber iPod / iPhone accessory..

apps will turn this into a whole other beast..just wait (now I sound like a xoom owner LOL)

In the US we also can get a few major channel and a handful of minor channels for free. Usually everyone gets the same major 5 and the other small ones depend on which major city you get your TV from. However it has been my experience that when people have the option to watch cable or satellite tv, these have a much larger number of channels and variety of programs so people tend to watch them more often.

Im just wondering about cable TV. Im Australian, we get around 20 good channels for free as long as we have an TV and an antenna (better channels than on pay tv). in America do you have to buy cable to watch tv or is there free channel like over here.

I have one and it’s ok. Love my iPhone, Macbook Pro and iPad but not so much with the Apple tv. There isn’t any way to filter searches on youtube and netflix is a superior experience on the 360. I don’t have a blu-ray player myself yet but my co-worker bought one for 79 dollars which includes a built in youtube player, Netflix, Vudu (didn’t know that was even still around) and of course has the ability to play blu rays for 20 bucks less. Of course it’s not as small and sleek as the Apple TV but imo a much better value.

I love my apple TV, it does one thing and it does it well, rents and plays movies. It’s cheap enough that I didn’t even consider the price when purchasing and I cancelled my monthly DVD plan which paid for the box. I don’t watch a lot of movies but its nice to have that instant on availability for those moments when I do.

My parents just bought two flat panel televisions with Netflix built-in. The layout is confusing and pokey. I had them buy the AppleTV 2, and now they are happy as clams. AppleTV 2 probably had the best implementation of Netflix on any device (At least that I’ve seen.).

If they are not watching Netflix, my folks are watching movies rented from Apple. They are saving enough renting from Apple over their cable provider that every fifth movie is essentially free. They probably rent two to three movies a week from Apple.

I suspect Apple has big plans for the AppleTV considering their North Carolina data center. Other indicators that the AppleTV may be part of a bigger strategy include rumblings of an Apple branded TV in the near future (I’m not holding my breath on that one, nor do I understand the upside) and cryptic placeholders discovered by Cabel Sasser of Panic that may point to iOS apps accessible via AppleTV (very likely).

Considering how long the AppleTV has been around, I think Apple has big plans internally that they are unwilling or unable to execute yet. Likely the holdup has been due to waiting for more ubiquitous high-speed Internet and negotiating contracts with content providers. Apple has also been rumored to be working on a new 4K streaming codec that will make 1080p look like 480p. The fact that bundled Mac OS X Lion desktop art is in Super HD resolution may hint at what is to come.

My only gripe with the ATV2 is that they claim flickr support, but they didn’t enable authentication. I don’t really want all my kiddo pictures open to everyone in the world… so I can’t see them on ATV2 either…

There are only a handfull of receivers as of now that have AirPlay. None of them have video AirPlay. Without the atv2 I would not be able to stream tv or movies to my livingroom. I agree the atv2 is justva start and I think that is What apple has said…

“Jailbroken ATV2? I’m all for it” <—- agreed. My jailbroken ATV2 with XBMC installed and a Western Digital 2 TB "My Live" wireless drive really opens up the ATV2 potential. It makes this little $99 black box pretty damn awesome.

I use all 3 of my Atv2s. I put some data on MobileMe and can access it thru iPhone4, iPad or ATV2. At home have Mac mini as HTPC and use ATV2 as AV extenders both wired or wirelessly. I use ATV2 at work educationally and for many other things. I use it to stream video from iPad or iphone4 and use these devices as remotes.
Works great.

I tried it that way and ultimately bought an ATV2; I despised having to screen share just to play a movie. Too much work. :) I enjoy my little black box but I moved it into the bedroom after I hooked my TV to the Internet. There does seem to be a lot of overlap with streaming content right now, and there doesn’t seem to be any one solution. If I could get Hulu on the ATV I’d be chuffed. (I also jailbroke it but because I’m not a power user I restored it to factory defaults.)

My answer to the question is, Maybe.

Absolutely!

It just works. It is designed to do certain things and it does them well. I have the older Apple TV and have set an older one up at a location connected to a matrix and 14 tvs. I love it, it works, and it does the basic needs very well. Plays music, Photo slide shows, movies, and it connects seamlessly to iTunes which is the main plus. It takes less than 5 minutes to set up and it just works. I can control it with an iPhone and iPad which takes seconds to set up.

Everything else out there takes an IT Cert or many hours and a steep learning curve to set up.

Just purchased an ATV2 and so far, I really love it. I don’t pay for cable TV. Other than my ATV2, the only content coming out of my TV is what I can pick up on a pair of rabbit ears. But I don’t feel wanting in the least bit. Between Netflix, YouTube, iTunes and the occasional show or game on local broadcast I’m getting all the content I want. And I love that I can also stream my music through iTunes as well as stream radio broadcasts. I like that I can use my iPhone to navigate. I would love to see some additional apps, like Hulu. The MLB app looks very cool, but not a big enough fan to pay for a subscription. All in all, for $99, ATV2 is a great value.

No… All-you-can-eat subscriptions to major programming without going through a cable or satellite provider is ahead of its time. I agree that there is nothing technically “new” about AppleTV – it’s just like the App store etc. Push the tech to sell the content.
