There’s a saying I once heard “if a tree falls in the woods and kills a mime, does anyone care?” I’ve never found that saying particularly insightful until now. Dell apparently wants to sell smartphones instead of PDAs.

Dell Axim

They have contracted Quanta computer to build a smartphone which they intend to launch at the end of this year. It will supposedly run WM6 and be HSDPA compatible with a QWERTY keyboard. The device is codenamed “Fly.”

I’m sure that we’ll hear more details in the coming months. I will say that I’m surprised that Dell is going to release an ordinary smartphone instead of trying to mimic the iPhone like so many people seem to be doing these days.
