But that doesn’t follow the Steve Jobs doctrine. He really didn’t believe that a quality laptop can be sold for less than $1000 and very specific things to say about companies that did, nor was he much concerned with what consumers are able to pay because Apple products are sexy, sleek, and very approachable with excellent marketing and are able to convince the avg. Apple buyer that money is well worth it. I’m not saying he’s completely wrong, but neither was he completely right. I’ve owned Apple, Dell, HP, Toshiba and Samsung. I’m not convinced that Apple has the right pricing structure down, but company-side they are maintaining their hardware profit-margins much better than any other major PC company out there.
Tl; dr: Apple doesn’t care that you can’t afford it, they know most people would spend the money anyway.

No because like most tablets, the Ipad doesn’t do what I need: content creation. I want to use OneNote because it’s my all time favorite program– I can’t do that with Android or Apple’s OS and Evernote just doesn’t cut it for me. I need Word, Excel, Ppt. I like my snappable windows. I want to use Corel and Illustrator. The Ipad neither has the power (with the A5) or the input (no digitizer pen)
What I really want is a tablet pc: core i5 processor, 100+ Gb SSD, 4gb ram or more, 5+hrs of battery life. I can connect a bluetooth keyboard and mouse when I need it and leave it at home when I don’t.
So why would I waste $300 on a product that will have such limited use, when I can put that money towards a tablet pc like the Asus Eee eP121 or even better (and what I’m saving for) the Samsung 7 series? It’s expensive at $1300, but I can completely replace my current laptop (which cost me a $1K at point of sale and when I compared a similarly built laptop from Apple it came out to @facebook-1002303843:disqus 2100 and didn’t have my 1080p screen). When I think about it, if Apple came out with a similar product to the Samsung 7 slate, they’d price it near the $1500 to $1800 range if not 1999 (since that last dollar makes such a difference).
So I will never buy an Ipad….but I won’t be buying a Xoom, Transformer, or any other tablet that isn’t a tablet PC.

Yes it will and already has. Android has all but put Apple out of the mobile market. Once Windows hits and Android 5 hits, Apple will just be another contender that failed.

In answer to the question of the title? Yes I can resist. I think ALL tablets right now are just 10″ smartphones without the calling hardware. Especially true of iPad. First off its just a 10″ iPod Touch. Its features of the orginal and capability was 100% identical to the iPod Touch. The only difference in the iPad 2 is the faster CPU. Apple purposely didn’t upgrade the iPod Touch to the dual-core yet because if they had, many would have bought that instead of the phone. Which was a lack luster release. In 5 years Apple has failed to move their iDevices to the next level. They are boring now. My plan is, once ATT get the Nokia 900, I will sell my 4S to buy it. Its a more worthy piece of hardware.

Yes! I don’t care if it has limited functions–as long as it is just as fast and can support apps for reading and writing, it will be great. I would rather they keep the retinal display. What I’ve found is that I need a separate device for writing–reading on the iPad is fine, but when I am studying and need to take notes, its annoying to switch from the reader to a writing app. Even the writing function in most reader apps are not sufficient. I like to be able to compare notes with the original text side by side.
If they cut functions from this new device, why’s that a problem? The two things that the iPad 2 has that I never use: camera and music. I don’t listen to music on my iPad because the headphone jack gets in the way depending on the orientation I hold it. Also, I do work on the iPad, and music distracts. I never took serious pics with it as the device is too awkward to hold.

So, if Apple comes out with a miniature tablet–larger than the iPod, I will be in the line waiting for mine!

Do i think this will happen? …Not really. If it does, I don’t think it will be $300– cheaper than an iPod? Yeah right, and if with limited functions? Remember the iPod touch 3gen (w/o camera or retinal display) was the same price as current iPod touch.

I won’t even buy a $100 iPAD. I Love the freedom of tthe android market. Open architecture will do wonder for the tablet market. Wait an see what is to com when Microsoft enter the tablet market. Open achitecture is the key to inovation. There once Apple was way ahead in the PC market but when the IBM compartible PC (open architecture) came out, Apple almost end up to the brink of bankrupt. Will history repeat itself?

$300 is not cheap when you look at fiscally strained educational institutions… if they released a not so fast but good build quality $150 model, they would sell more of those than i could probably count in a year.

I had an iPhone 3GS for 18 months (I didn’t buy it myself, it was a present) as a first smartphone. It was cool at the beginning, but quickly it turned out to be very disappointing due to the OS (and iTunes too). Then I discovered Android which is much closer to what I think an OS should be.
So I come to the point : I won’t get an iOS based device any more, no matter how much it costs.

Such a funny read… You act like it is such a serious topic. BTW, There are amazing free apps on ios… And unlike on android, apple allows devs to mark their apps down to free for promotional periods. Apps like app miner find these price drops, resulting in 100s of PAID apps free every day, if so inclined.

But It’s cool… I prefer to enjoy all brands based on what they can do for me.

At this point in the process, with ipad profits through the roof, at their scale, they should be able to offer it for $299 and still make a profit. Who knows, maybe they’ll cheap out and go composite.. I know a lot of folks who loved the rounded 3g/gs back… I hated it, but to each their own.

It’s an Apple product. I wouldn’t own it if it was free. I will not support their captive market for apps or their closed operating system. I won’t support their vile attempts to monopolize whole market segments through an all too liberal patent system, or their pervasive predatory business practices.

I do have friends that like their products. So if I did get a free one, one of my friends would benefit greatly, unless I could somehow trade it for another Transformer or Transformer Prime.

Its interesting that people will answer yes I want one or no I don’t but nobody is really asking for under $300 what are apple sacrificing (assuming its a new ipad). Are they going to take the kindle fire route and scale back on features or use cheaper parts?
And if apple is really diving in and taking a $200+ loss on each unit, shareholders should probably wise up and exit for a quarter or two while apple swallow those charges.

Kinda reminds me of when calvin klein made $100 t-shirts of high high quality but most couldn’t bear to spend their money on. but as soon as CK super cheaply made $50 t-shirts came around they bought it.

Then you might as well quit buying things all together. You think any company wants to lose money? The whole idea of business is to make money. The more you make, the more successful your company is and the more you can contribute back by donations (which Apple does plenty of), innovation through research (which costs money and Apple also does plenty of) and bringing new products to market (which… Apple does plenty of).
By the way, since the most logical response you are most likely to have is to call me a troll, this was posted on a Galaxy Nexus.
