If you're in the market for an ordinary (read: non-tablet) ereader, but you're looking for something other than Amazon's own offering, ICARUS has launched a solid compromise: the Illumina HD. With the Illumina HD comes Android 4.2 and the Amazon app, giving it the best of both worlds.

The Illumina HD is obviously an Android-toting ereader, unlike many alternatives that don't readily reveal their Android underpinnings. The use of an e-ink display gives the ereader that now-common paper look, but comes with the expected snafus regarding things like animations and refresh rates.

According to the device's Amazon page, the Illumina HD has a built-in light near the display for reading in the dark, and offers WiFi connectivity for downloading ebooks (and perhaps browsing the web, if you don't mind being driven mad by the slow refresh rates).

The entire unit measures in at 7.1 x 0.4 x 4.9-inches and weighs a bit over 1lb. Because the device runs Android 4.2, users can install whatever apps they would like (other ebook apps besides the Amazon app, for example). The battery will last for about 6000 page turns on a charge, and there's 4GB of storage, as well as a microSD expansion slot. The ereader is available now for about $180 USD.
