There is nothing better for a customer than a competition. Once Netflix is gone do you (author) think that Amazon will keep its price low?
The main reason amount of companies that offer streaming service is limited its because of exclusive deals and (old, stupid and in general not connected to reality) copyright law. Let's face it 100% of "Hollywood", Sony, Starz, HBO, etc... whole entertainment industry has a dream of going back to days of VHS, CD&DVD without internet. All they do (laws against piracy with more and more restrictions all over the world) is to get as close to similar environment as possible.
There is one thing that would change a lot and two that would change everything.

1. Total ban on deals with exclusive content as it is against the best interest of customer. If that would be something to eat or drink it would be against the law to have such a policy by distributors as they have now, where they limit subject that can sell their products/content as it helps to up keep MONOPOLY (and that = higher prices).

2. No more geo-localization over the internet. Services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc should be allowed to stream what the have wherever they can find someone who will pay for it. If people in Europe can not get the content legal way as the ones from USA because of crazy restrictions they will get it anyway in a less legal way and that will be a real loss to industry.

Restricting access, having different prices on the content in different regions of the world is stupid, unfair and it is one of the main reasons piracy is a problem.

Amazon needs to get it's streaming client out onto more devices such as TVs and BluRay players. Netflix is everywhere and this makes them the easy choice right now.
You wouldn't like Amazon so much if you were deaf or hard of hearing. NFlix has finally gotten its act together and has started offerening a decent selection of captioned and subtitle streamed videos--it will probably take a lawsuit or a threat of one (as with Nflix) to get Amazon to see the light. Until then I'm a dedicated Nflix user, and you have yr head where the sun don't shine

REALLY , REALLY ....

I am just wondering !
Do you actually get paid to write such crap ?
I am in awe of your complete stupidity.
I do believe, you have a right to your opinion, and am glad their are still outlets for you to do so.
That being said are you really so blind to believe a monopoly is a good thing.
Again, Really, Really, seriously. You are either stupid, blind or employed by Amazon.
I was just wondering , where would you post your thoughts,(as moronic as they are) if there was no competition among........ Where would the incentive be for a huge corporation to let you speak freely, its not like you have anywhere else to post your thoughts.

we need both netflix and amazon and hopefully some other strong players will also show up soon.
As much as netflix seems like a monopoly, Amazon is a monopoly.
Its business model is very very similar to Microsofts; ie leverage one monopoly to burn another market and then rebuild it to its needs.
Amazon is NOT what the market needs in fact; its the opposite.

All the vitriolic comments!

I will just say that I made the Netflix to Amazon switch because I found myself not getting my money's worth out of Netflix (I think I'm going to watch movies, but I don't as much as I think I will). Since I'm a regular Amazon customer, the free shipping component of my membership has already paid for my year, after about two months. Now I'm left wondering why the switch took me so long.

What killed Netflix for me was their messing with their business model--I got the feeling that I was dealing with a company that wasn't in control of what they were doing. It didn't bother me as long as it didn't affect my membership, but when they caused me to have to make choices, I did, and they lost.

That said, I don't like the idea of one company having it all, either. I'm left with supporting idiots or monopolists. Hard choice to make, maybe.

By the way, eMusic lost me in a similar fiasco: I didn't mind the slowly rising prices. They lost me when they changed their business model and started charging me MUCH more for content I had been specifically running away from supporting with my $$: the big business music industry, as opposed to small independents.

What killed Netflix for me was their messing with their business model–I got the feeling that I was dealing with a company that wasn’t in control of what they were doing. It didn’t bother me as long as it didn’t affect my membership, but when they caused me to have to make choices, I did, and they lost.

That said, I don’t like the idea of one company having it all, either. I’m left with supporting idiots or monopolists. Hard choice to make, maybe.

By the way, eMusic lost me in a similar fiasco: I didn’t mind the slowly rising prices. They lost me when they changed their business model and started charging me MUCH more for content I had been specifically running away from supporting with my $$: the big business music industry, as opposed to small independents.

Gotta agree with most of the other posters here- a monopoly is NOT what we as consumers want. Besides, ideally, this will eventually work out like normal television carriers currently do- with each streaming service having agreements with the same content providers, and offering their own bundles and prices. This way everyone gets a choice, and there's a good chance you'll get the content you want regardless of which service you pay for. You just might have a different bundle with only the stuff you want from provider A that matches your viewing preferences. ;)

Gee whiz, why not have both to choose from? The Amazon deal is great for the free shipping alone. TV/Movies are a plus. Between the two of them - a giant catalog of stuff to watch!

Thank you, Don Reisinger, for your opinion. I support your right to post it, but I hope no one in the business takes you seriously.
Based on your viewing habits, and Amazon Prime membership, it looks like Amazon Prime is a better fit for YOU than Netflix. You understand if your view isn't "one size fits all", right?
Again, I hope the powers-that-be at the media companies understand your article does not represent a consensus among the general populace that pay for media.

I agree. I am still baffled by Amazon selling the Kindle Fire without any way to hook it up to a TV so that people can watch Amazon streaming video on their TV's. Amazon Prime would be awesome for me if I could just access it via my PS3 or something.

The biggest advantage that Amazon has is the fact that many of its cloud customers include entities like Hulu, NBC, HBO, etc who use Amazon to manage the very traffic that comes to their sites and streaming offerings now. Perhaps Amazon can simply offer to save them some money on their cloud services in exchange for content. I believe this is already a process taking place behind the scenes. Netflix does not have this advantage and is actually disadvantaged because from a streaming standpoint, Netflix has a very "Napster" like reputation in the movie industry, not because of anything Netflix did but mainly because they pose such a perceived threat to the industry as a whole. Netflix could likely become the sacrificial lamb so that the industry can see that the model actually can make them money if they all play nice.

Until Amazon gets off it's butt and releases an iPad, iPhone, and Apple TV version of its player they're nothing more than a land locked video player to me. I got a kindle fire and have watched some video via the prime membership but they have nothing more than what Netflix has, and some less. The fire is too small I don't like watching TV on small devices, the iPad is the right size. They use flash on the website and I've uninstalled flash a long time ago for a much nicer web experience.

The Netflix advantage right now is not the streaming catalog -- it's really good players on multiple platforms. I stream Netflix on Windows Media Center, Xbox, and Windows Phone with great, platform-appropriate UI sharing the same account.
