Well, the Air isn't really supposed to be a main computer (sounds like just a talking point, I know), but I work (and game, a bit), on my Mac Pro and use my Macbook Pro as a secondary, and I rarely rarely ever use its optical drive (installing Starcraft 2 and Windows XP, I believe), which could both have been done with my external, or by using the Mac Pro's.

I wouldn't recommend the Air as a primary for anyone who uses a computer for work, but to me, Firewire is far more useful than an optical drive. But for a secondary, or just another computer in a multi computer household, than sure. Hell, I'm thinking about adding an SSD and moving the current drive into the optical bay on my laptop.

This past week I just removed my dvd drive from my MBP 15" and plopped in another 750gb drive. My work kept my other drive at the 1% mark for far too long. I swapped over all my work on the the spare drive and use it exclusively for that and a spare cache drive for photoshop. The times I've used the optical drive on my MBP in it's 2.5 yrs of service can be counted on my fingers. Having an external is the way to go for me. An air is nice, but has limited power for what I want/need. I only wish I'd pulled the drive out a year ago.

Everyone has different needs.

I want a camera -face forwarding on my mobile to keep in touch while travelling.
While others think whats the point of this on my phone?

My next laptop doesn't have DVD - but you need to make a backup some how! I have never used my DVD drives unless reinstalling software - I do use USB and can't wait for USB 3.

My car only runs CD though! so I will always make sure my main PC has DVD drives etc

People will buy what they need and thanks to USB 3 it will be easy to add on external media drives as computers become more portible than ever.

Good article btw.

MG is doing what he and the folks over at TechCrunch do best, stir up controversy and pick fights with everyone, rather than have serious discussions. That's what I like about Slashgear, VentureBeat, and BGR: well-thought out content, even when adopting a conventional view (or in this sense, conventional as in old-fashioned). It's refreshing to hear a voice of reason in an industry where expectations change daily and perspectives are all relative.
