As a guy who has owned 5 HTC phones, would like to say this problem started years ago. The bottom line is they chose next quarters financial results over delivering a great product and experience to existing customers. Remember that customer that didn't get an OS update and had to deal with a phone with bugs and crappy battery life for 18 months? Those are the people that won't be buying your phone this quarter. And since most customers aren't shareholders and investors, they don't care too much about "product cycles". This loyal HTC customer is gone for good.

Unfortunately whatever HTC do, Samsung can top it in terms of hardware. Samsung gets the first dips to the latest AMOLED screens and they usually have the fast chips too. Also Samsung's plastic means, as much as it is hated, their phones are thin and light.

The only way at this point for HTC to compete is either to differentiate through software or service, or lower price. Sense UI might be hated by geeks but there is a reason why it is still there.

Source? I'm not an industry expert, but just do the news cycle math. Carrier iq made headlines in the last quarter, senators launched investigation, lawsuits in multiple states. Other manufacturers and providers distance themselves from the software, all but Htc. Did this have an effect on q4 + q1 revenues? Or was it too many choices in quality handsets?
Btw battery life improvements are welcomed, but I've never had a problem with any of my units.

Htc may notice their fortune faded with the discovery of carrier iq. It may have left the news cycle but its still on the mind of the public. Htc has an excellent build quality, sense overlay, plenty of units to choose from, so what could be wrong? They failed to strip carrier iq from the handsets. Explaining it won't make it go away. If Htc launched a pr campaign that let the public know that carrier iq was a success and they were finished with it, didn't use it in the next products released, removed it from existing units, and pushed out updates like ics faster, they could turn the tide. Otherwise Htc will fade away like Windows mobile.

Make one MEGA penta-band device with 3G/HSPA+ a la GNex, 4.5" 720p HD super Amoled screen, Quad core 1.5GHz S4 chipset, beats audio, 32GB internal plus 32GB micro SD card slot, 1.5-2GB RAM, 12-16Mpx rear and 2-4Mpx front cams, 2500+mAh battery, pure Android ICS with NO Sense UI and not more than 130mm tall, 68mm wide little or no bezel, abt 12-14mm thick due to a bigger battery (will trade a little girth for more juice). If the Razr Maxx can cram 3300mAh in a device of that size sure HTC can almost duplicate that with a 2500+mAh battery. Design change welcomed and LTE variants for LTE networks but starting point should be 3G/HSPA+ 21/42. Now that will be a pretty HOT seller, a device for all of us who yearn for that MEGA HTC DEVICE...not a bunch of just Okay or mediocre devices. But for now i am loving my GNex (with one or two reservations..being more than 130mm tall and battery being less than 2000mAh). I have my eyes and hands open just waiting for that one killer HTC device to make me think other-wise..EDGE or ZETA hope one of them comes with penta-band and the unthinkable NO SENSE UI
