As far as recommendations, HD2. Most of my work colleagues have Blackberry, but after seeing the HD2, some are even impressed, knowing full well that a Blackberry person is akin to a race horse wearing blinkers :)

The Hero was initially my first choice actually (before launch of HD2), with the awesome customisable Sense UI (different to the HD2 Sense UI). However very small text in most menu’s led me to the HD2.

On the App side, Android Apps and Win Apps are both very limited compared to iPhone.

However the HD2 screen is just magnificent!
Photos are superb, despite what you have read.
Music is similar to coverflow, only lacking volume change from the touch screen. Crazy oversight!
Videos play perfectly smoothly when created to suit HD2 (mpeg-4 ffmpeg – even though device warns not correct format, simply ignore and continue to copy to device).

Exchange integration with ease.
Apps install seamlessly.
MyPhone syncing is superb.

Only two GRIPEs, SMS’s sometimes stuck in Outbox. Check XDA-forums on this (happens to some including me), and secondly cannot purchase Apps from Marketplace using SA Credit Card!!! Available maybe in May 2010!

I appreciate your useful comments. Am also in SA and looking at the Hero / HD2 / BB Bold 9700. HD2 sounds best being latest technology, although I could only find it offered through Nashuamobile. Where did you get yours and what would you recommend?

I have had my HD2 since Dec11 and is without doubt the best device I have owned. I also have 2 3GS’s in the family and my own personal IPod Touch 32Gb, so I have some experience in these matters. When it comes to comparing ‘Apples’ with ‘HD2 Apples’, I’m afraid there is only one winner, HTC.
You could argue the App Store and in ONLY that you would be right :)

Hi, I´ve been using the HD2 for some time now and im really pleased with the phone. In the review it is mentioned about the HD2´s capability to function as a WIFI-router that this functionality only supports one connection at a time. This is not correct. I and three friends of mine have been connected to the HD2 simultaniously and we had no problems what so ever.

Playing safe always mean lower standards. Sometimes risk compensates highly.
You always will find a list of negatives for every phone, most of them are subjective. Decide your priorities of what you need in a phone that is also subjective, but it doesn’t matter because is what you need and want not what others prefer.

In the other hand technology is rather objective. From that point the 3GS can’t compite with HD2.
*44% Larger screen but only a bit taller than 3Gs
*800×480 resolution vs 320×480
*5 mpx camera vs only 3 mpx in the 3GS
*Double LED flash vs NO flash (Forget pictures at night)
*1 GHZ CPU vs 600 mgz
*Removable Storage Memory vs NO removable
*Removable Battery vs No removable battery
*FM Radio vs NO Fm Radio
*FREE XDA Development & Customization vs NO personal D & C
*Multitasking vs NO Multitasking

More subjective items:
*3GS is considered the best UI. Intuitive and simple.
But some people claim HD2 screen is a better visual experience because the resolution and the size of the screen.

*3GS has an intuitive and simple navigation. Easy for any casual user.
Others may prefer the power and versatility HD2. The way Sense UI handle Contacts, emails and messages is people centered far ahead more efficient that the 3GS.

*3GS have a central point (ONLY) to get apps. That’s very practical.
Others prefer the freedom to get whatever they want from any place they want.

It’s no secret I’m going for the HD2, but you should follow the one suits your preferences better.

Hi, I need your help : I want to buy a phone either HD2 or 3Gs and i am really confused. some comments on HD2 are really bad, feedback from users that would do anything to get rid of it (already), like hanging, bad response etc….
Can someone tell me if this is really a good phone or should i play it safe and just go to Iphone?

Thanks for an interesting review. I’ve got a question about the rendering speed of web pages in the browser. As the N900 shows full flash content, and you measured “full loading”, does the full loading take less time on the HD2 because it doesn’t load the the flash content?

wow i am going to love this phone. being a htc fan my whole life, i’m ready to get this. touch diamond 2, hero, and than going to get this. living in a ho dunk town though i’m thinking internet shopping. i checked out ebay but their searches were down yesterday so I am thinking either cellhut or gsmallover.com either way I better get mine by friday(sunday today) i want the camera to be out of this world and I hope it rocks on t-mobile, being my last 2 purchases were actually pretty slow up here, wisconsin sucks for 3g btw. anyways i hope i’m as satisfied as my last two htc phones.

Had mine for two days now- OS is very snappy with no noticeable lag. Can flip through pictures, scroll around webpages and contacts etc. I’m no fanboy but it’s the first cell I’ve tried that REALLY gives iphone 3gs a run for it’s money. I’ve had them all- Droid (for two days) Pre, Hero, etc, but always ended up going back to the (somewhat dull) 3GS. Sense is really beautiful on this screen, animations smooth as hell.

The one HUGE x-factor is going to be apps. Legacy winmo apps look like hell on this baby. If Devs will step up and create HTC or iPhone quality programs, widgets, etc (I realize not a true widget, but you get my drift). iPhone owners are going to MISS all the apps which will be a deal breaker for many, but this IMO is the first true competitor for Apple..

When i’m watching your video at 02:58, you actually misused the multitouch yeh and please do an accurate walkthrough or highlight you said because it will affect the buyers inclusive me. About the HD2, i don’t actually care how the TouchFlo does, but i wish to see more on the system performance. I hope there will be another highlight for the system performance :) Snapdragon and 512MB ROM should be doing fine or even better than iPhone which has only 256MB ROM and downclocked processor 600Mhz or any other phone, shouldnt it?

Great review, awesome pics and accurate.
I had this beauty in my hands for an hour courtesy a caring staff member at HTC SA.
Recently had the HTC HERO for a day. Even the HD2 finds the HERO to be a hard act to follow. The HERO Sense UI is in a completely different league to the HD2 Sense UI.
If you’re oblivious to the HERO Sense UI and the Android slickness, you won’t be bothered with this statement. I’m not against WM per se, but having been privileged to experiment with the HTC HERO device, WM and HD2 Sense UI are positively archaic!
The larger screen is a joy, but this comes at a price of comfort when actually making calls even with large hands (someone mentioned earlier this is still actually a phone :))
As for the Camera lens raised above the surface, can’t quite fathom that one … must be an eastern thing!
The physical appearance to me is a little uninspiring, resembling perhaps the old box shaped BM compared to it’s modern counterpart …
Bottom line, since at my age the HERO text is too small, this will probably be my Diamond replacement that has endeared me to HTC.
Oh yes, and the HTC Service which in South Africa is just superb, as I’m sure it is in the rest of the world.
The HD2 is where I’m headed … but will always miss the HERO Sense UI and Android marriage that is not quite evident in the MS 6.5 and lacklustre Sense UI offering which make up the OS partnership on the HD2!

The keyboard in landscape is huge it takes almost all the realestate screen, It’s no practical using word, excel or any type of paragraph text.

Thanks. Camera quality is really bad, much worse than previous HD1 or Diamond2, that is shame for HTC! Question: do you have stylus for capacitive display(for example from Iphone), could you try it? Remote desktop can not be control by fingers(very tiny icons,windows), so stylus here is necessary…

I know what you mean about the screen refresh in the status bar. It seemed to be linked to the weather animation – the same flicker didn’t occur when I switched to a stationary background (i.e. turned the weather animations off).

Unfortunately TouchFLO 3D on HTC HD2 seems to be bogging down the device quite a bit. Which could mean a lot more battery consumption. Did you notice how the data connection icon marked with ‘H’ located at the top notification area has been blinking out of control? There seems to be a screen refresh issue in the notification area. Any animation happening in the main screen makes that icon flicker.

In general the device looks great, besides the fact that the buttons on the bottom aren’t positioned consistently (2 buttons merged, the other 2 aren’t? wtf?)
