I have had nothing but problems with the HTC desire. First one the speaker was so messed up you couldn't understand what people were saying to you. The second one they sent me wouldn't get reception. Even in downtown it couldn't pick up a signal and the third one would get stuck in the reboot menu threatening to lose all my data! Dont buy the HTC desire it is a piece of crap!

I offered a Blackberry 8900 to my father and he is quiet happy.
Actually is has no issue with outlook. The GPS is not good. He doesn't use it as a multimedia phone. Just e-mails, calls, agenda, take pictures shots.
It's always better to have a real GPS like Garmin or Tomtom, etc ...
The good thing with a Blackberry is the battery life and it's easy to use.

Between
I have a Nexus one. It last 1 day before I need to charge it.I always have Edge or Wifi connected. If I play Robo Defense I need to charge it after 2 hours :-).
The synchronization is easy. I have gmail (agenda, contacts and e-mails). Launcherpro plus and pure messenger widget to have nice widgets for your agenda and e-mails.

Heldros, thanks for the suggestion. I did check the Blackberry but it works better with Lotus Notes and not so well with Outlook stand alone (i.e. not on Exchange Server).
In addition, more countries will probably start to ban them (already UAE, Saudi, Bahrian and India and Indonesia threatening) because the local 'security' services can not monitor your usage (SMS, calls and email).
I have never owned one but I believe they do not have any add on applications (e.g. Tom Tom, Garmin, Currency Converter etc). Is that right? Most of my banking mates say they use it because the company provides it for free - not their choice if their own money!
What do you reckon?

Your post is timely as I have just had to hard reset my HTC Desire again as it duplcated all my contacts (5,482 origionals) but this time, not my calendar. I have to hard reset once a week and then re-establish all my preferences and lose all my SMS (not fussed about that). I also have to manually set up my APN which I luckily now know off by heart.
So sorry to inform you but I have spent many hours and email interchanges with HTC. The sync software is unstable and version 2 is at least better than 3 as you can see what damage it has done. They keep pressing for my ISP to switch me to Exchange Server or to use the Gmail sync where all my data is duplicated on the web. Given I travel extensively in different timezones, I think this is fraught with potential issues. I prefer to sync locally via USB. If you Google 'HTC Sync Desire Outlook' you will see I am not alone.
As for 'setting up my phone the right way', I use my phone for making/recieving calls, manually checking for emails and once daily check my Gmail. Nothing else. No games, no Facebook, Gmail Talk, My Location disabled, even Auto Time Check disabled ... nothing. Most of the battery usage (80%) is attributed to 'Andriod System'. So what do you suggest I tweak?
Happy to hear suggestions

Desiree
Two tests of my Desire for battery usage.
First test using only the phone facility with everything else turned off gave me nearly 5 hours of battery life before the yellow warning bar was shown.

Second test with only the phone usage switched on and with a couple of short sessions with G Mail and GPS, gave the phone 4.5 hours before the yellow bar appeared.

If your battery is only lastings a few hours, you may wish to take the phone to your retailer and ask for a replacement battery.

When my Desire is running programs it will last from 1 to 2 days before I need to check the battery level.

HTC Desire DOES sync with MS Exchange (email, calendar) and with the right settings lives on one battery charge for more than 30 hours - this is enough for most of business users. Just spend some time to set up your phone in the right way - and you will be pleased with what it delivers.

I had been using it for over 3 months now (and I also have Nokia E71, Nokia N900 and iPhone 3GS) and this is my phone of choice. Had to purchase a car charger with microUSB connector, though :-)

The HTC Desire is a large disappointment for a business user. It wont synchronise with Outlook (forget the HTC soution to use Gmail), the battery life is pathetic (you need to be able to charge every 3 hours if you use it to make or recieve calls) and unless you have a good data plan, it will 'talk' to the internet constantly without your knowledge.
Yes, it is fast and easy to use but for me, the short comings make it a competitor to the IPhone - yet another phone that is not business friendly.
When is a manufcaturer going to realise there is a big client base of road warrior business users with good money to spend that dont want Facebook, a good camera, music etc... just a fast machine, good battery life and the ability to synchronise with Outlook?

The battery life is crap on my Nexus One.
With EDGE connection, auto sync, brightness at zero and 3 screens I can manage 6 hours.
That's the bad side of Android. There are too many apps running in the backround and even if you kill them with a task manager they come back.
So they drain the battery.
ANdroid is very stable.

HTC desire is very promising! Need your suggestion onto the following pls.

I am using HD2 since January'10 but thinking for Desire, some HD2 hardware issue will fetch me a new replacement for free, either HD2 or Desire [if I want].

Never used Android before so a bit confused, will be using this phone for work and social; intensive & all-time connected to GPRS/EDGE [no 3G in India], multiple mail a/c, exchange server, outlook syncing, browsing, applications, online payments and booking, Social networking, Office editing mainly Excel. How is the battery life as compared to HD2 and stability, / handling RAM and on board user memory?

Thanks!

Purchased my HTC Desire 2 nights ago and love it. Its everything i expected from all the reviews and videos I've seen. Bought the phone through Telstra who have exclusive rights to it for the first few months.

One thing that annoys me about that is that the phone appears to have their branding on it. Totally annoys the hell out of me. Want to remove it but I would most likely have to flash it Sad. Came across http://www.HTCDesireForum.com not sure how good it is, but worth a look.

I have deduced how to opt for 2G and I have set that option on my Desire.
I had never touched, let alone used an iPhone or Android phone, until 4 weeks ago, when my son bought a Samsung Galaxy Portal. Being of a 'certain age' I was amazed at how modern technology has advanced.
Because I have not used such a modern phone before, I believe that I have been able to learn how to use the Desire faster than if I had to re-learn again from using another maker's phone. The Desire is remarkable. I can recommend, Advanced Task Killer and NetCounter. These 2 Apps are useful aids to keep an eye on the phone's usage and battery saving methods.

Great HTC Desire review, been following this phone for a long time and waiting for HTC Good job! Will be getting this phone ASAP! Used to have the HD2 and Sense is great. There is no wrong with the phone, Is anything there?. I think HTC Desire phone could be the best of all time, it is better than iphone. It is very hard for people to review a phone and say it is much better and a "iphone beater" look is the problems with the iphone. And look at all the great. Oh yeah the app store is not as big as apples, but thats getting better and alot of apps are time wasting. Great review though. Looking forward... http://www.gsmcellulars.com

I have a Desire from T-Mobile UK. One Review mentions that battery savings can be made by choosing a 2G network rather than a 3G. I have already downloaded the 'Advanced Task Killer' App., which is going to be a great help. How do I change the 3G to 2G please ?
I am using my home Router (Not a T-Mobile ISP) for access to the internet and most of my email, in order to avoid building up too much use within the T-Mobile Package. Once I am out of the house I'll obviously revert to T-Mobile's Internet connection. Any help and advice will be much appreciated.

I not impressed with HTC desire. Nexus One is the most powerful Android phone in existence, it has voice recognition but HTC Sense User Interface is so fantastic and the Desire is much cheaper I'd go for the Desire. No GPU in the Desire ? Nexus One has a CPU which enables truly breathtaking video performance. http://www.gsmcellulars.com

Yes there is a way to turn off the SenseUI, if you search on YouTube there is a video and it is really easy to do and it turns your Desire into a Nexus One, (in user interface only mind you).

I think i found it by accident and was called "Turn HTC Desire into a Nexus One"

Hope this helps.

I have been looking at this phone for a while now (when it started as the HTC Bravo), I have a T mobile G1 at the moment, which I am very, very pleased with, it has lasted longer than any other phone I have ever had, but it is starting to slow down a little now, too many apps, I think!! Thanks for a great non jargoned review. My question is, Can HTC sense be turned off and just use the stock Android O/S ?
