3G and 3G+ cover more territory in Europe than in the US, and the speeds are actually very close to the standard's maximum (meaning you do get 20-40 Mbit/s download and 5-10 Mbit/s upload speeds). That's very close to 4G LTE in the US at the moment, and much faster than US 4G (which is actually not 4G at all - thank the FTC and all the marketing geniuses for that) The data plans are also cheaper.

But the phones are more expensive, the contracts are just as bad as AT&T's, you have to get a new SIM for every country if you travel (forget about CDMA - it sucks, plus a lot of times the networks won't activate your phone anyway), network representatives don't even know what a data plan is, etc. etc.

Best and cheapest way is to get an unlocked phone from the US and use it on Orange or Vodafone...

Europe didn't get the iPhone on release date. Europe's >2 years behind in 4G LTE bc gov control freaks picked the wrong standard as usual. You might look into why Europeans who travel around europe take several phones from several carriers. They have irksome restrictions too. If you don't want a 2 year contract, buy your iPhone or latest Android for $700. No one's stopping you. Funny how europeans rely on American and Canadian tech and software for smartphones: Qualcomm, Apple, Google, RIM, Microsoft, etc. How's Nokia's marketshare doing in non-third world phones? They're relying on Anglo-Saxons to dig them out of the hole built by ignoring RIM, Apple and Google for a decade. Nokia was a great system. It's a shame management let such talented engineers down.

Mark Raby, thanks for publicizing this. I was mad enough at VZW for forcing me to hack my "Nexus" device to access Google Wallet's NFC. But completely locking down a device is control freakery on a new level. Enjoy that "4G," on big blue.

It's too much to hope that Google will grow a pair then kick some ass at Motorola by killing Motoblur once the acquisition's complete. Make Motorola pure Android then sell bloat skins to tools who like clogging their systems and delaying development.

Your arguments make little to no sense at all and unfortunately represents an overwhelming statistic in America....the one sided consumer (a kin to former generations "the customer is always right").

Your first complaint about manufacturers being held by the balls due to a lack of discounts for bringing your own phone is senseless. Why would they provide a discount for that? They are a service probser...not phone vendor. They allow you to have no contract when you bring your ow phone, giving you the freedom to leave when you feel you are being "f#8!ed".

Your second argument about loving the 2 year contract to screw the customers all that want is also an ignorant statement....the 2 year contract is a cost recover method. Not to say phone prices aren't inflated....but when a customer like yourself walks in and gets a phone for $199 ( a healthy sum of money in and of itself).........or better yet you get it for $100 or free with an Amazon price match, the company takes an up front loss for that device....so to recoup their costs AND turn a profit (imagine a publicly traded company trying to turn a profit in a capitalist country......crazy right?....not zo much) companies like Verizon and AT&T etc ASK you to sign a 2 year contract.....you are not obligated to do so as you can pay the full no commitment price and maintain the freedom to come and go as you choose when they "f&^*" you as a consumer.

Lastly....the phones don't need to be unlocked...while it would be desirable for us as consumers does not need to happen. What is the backlash? You buy your phone on eBay and at&T loses money? Nope they are a service provider and that still get that revenue. Where will you go? VERIZON....nope never unlocking their phones either.....next T-Mobile? While decent in some markets it's not a comparable experience to Verizon or At&t in many places sogood luck with that. And if they were that great you would be there now instead of complaining.

I will agree that the carriers should continue to improve their networks but at this point that takes two things....spectrum and time. SCHOOL got in the way of a big move for T-Mobile and At&T customers but hey life goes on. The only thing we can do is enjoy the phones and stop expecting EVERYTHING FOR FREE......I call it the Napster effect.

Good old AT$T. First, they sold me an iPhone with an unlimited plan (4 of them actually...family plan.)...then they decided to limit my plan after I use a certain amount of my unlimited data...not cool. I also use AT$T's uVerse at home...and they're talking about putting limits on that. No. They're getting nearly $450 a month from me across all the services that I use. Stop trying to squeeze me out of using the services you sold me if you want to keep getting money from me.

This is where the phone manufactures should say f#8! (insert carrier) and sell it unlocked. The only problem is the carriers have the phone manufactures by the balls because there is no (significant) discount (if any at all) bringing your own phone to the party. T-mobile, last I checked, was the only carrier that gives you a discount on a plan if you bring/have your own phone already.

The carriers LOVE these 2 year plans and having these "specific" phones because they can f&^* the consumer all they want.

What HAS to happen is that phones need to be unlocked. This will allow for better pricing on phones. So, no outrages prices on phones. secondly this FORCE the carriers to improve their networks greatly and not nickel and dime us. But the carriers, especially the big ones, have essentially paid off the government to make sure that never happens because if it does, THEY will be the ones who will suffer the most. Simply put nobody is going to go with at&t, when you can pick the phone you want and stick in a T-mobile sim card that cuts your at&t monthly bill in half.

Carriers like to have you addicted to their "subsidies", so that they can stick you with to a long term contract / early termination fees, and zing you with additional $$ per month to "pay back" their grossly inflated prices.
There's very little reason why you need to buy your phone from a carrier now, especially with TMobile and AT&T: If you need a new phone, buy an international model from Amazon or Europe. If not, Ebay one. Make sure you buy an unlocked phone in either case.TMobile charges a lower rate when you're on an unsubsidized phone. Satan, ahem..., AT&T sticks you with the subsidy fee regardless.

AT&T is one of the most restrictive companies, the X is a great phone, but doing things like bootloading makes it harder for it to sell. In addition to that AT&T didn't let HTC use their packaging they wanted for the X to make the unboxing experience unique from every other phone, instead it's just the generic orange AT&T box. The only phone AT&T gives freedom for box design is the iPhone, it's almost as if AT&T doesn't want to sell any phone other than the iPhone.

AT&T is one of the most restrictive companies, the X is a great phone, but doing things like bootloading makes it harder for it to sell. In addition to that AT&T didn’t let HTC use their packaging they wanted for the X to make the unboxing experience unique from every other phone, instead it’s just the generic orange AT&T box. The only phone AT&T gives freedom for box design is the iPhone, it’s almost as if AT&T doesn’t want to sell any phone other than the iPhone.
