My my, has it really been over twelve months since HTC’s original TyTN launched? They tell us it’s so, and thus spring (and by spring I mean confirm what everyone has pretty much known for a while now) the introduction of the cleverly-named TyTN II on the European market. High on the handset’s list of curiosities is the slide’n’tilt 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen display which not only clicks up to reveal a keyboard but is adjustable for angle should you want to pretend that the WM6 TyTN II is a teeny-tiny laptop.
Other cellular joys include both tri-band UMTS and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE so that no matter where you go the TyTN II should work, HSDPA for high-speed downloads, b/g WiFi and built-in GPS so that you don’t get lost after all that travelling (although it only comes with a “taster edition” of TomTom Navigator 6).
A 3-megapixel autofocus camera, Bluetooth 2.0 and touch-sensitive scroll round out the headline features, although there’s also a business card scanner for those PR junkets you love to hate, a microSD slot and 256MB ROM/128MB RAM. All packed into a case just 112 x 59 x 19mm and weighing 190g. The 1,350mAh battery is rated for up to 365hrs standby/420mins talktime in GSM mode or 350hrs/264mins UMTS.
From September you’ll be able to pick up the TyTN II from HTC direct or Vodafone, or from Orange in first the UK, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands, before Spain, Poland, Romania and Slovakia in early October, and finally from T-Mobile (where it will be called the MDA Vario III) in late October. Price is yet to be announced.
