HTC Android bootloader policy under review

A glimmer of hope for would-be Android modders tempted by the HTC Sensation's solid hardware but turned off by the company's policy on locked bootloaders: HTC says it's considering changing its mind. According to the HTC Facebook page, the company is "reviewing the issue and our policy around bootloaders and will provide more information soon."

The turnaround – if that's what HTC decides to do – would follow a precedent set earlier this year, where Sony Ericsson confirmed it would be unlocking the bootloader on certain models in its 2011 Android range. The functionality would not be across the board, however, since some carrier-customized XPERIA devices had proprietary software loaded. Still, it was seen as a welcome sop to owners.

HTC may still decide to stick with its bootloader policy, but given the growing furore among Android power-users we imagine they're giving a reversal some serious consideration. Many of you have told us that, while the Sensation appeals, you're opting for the Samsung Galaxy S II because it's easier to load with third-party ROMs, something which would definitely bite into HTC's reputation as at the bleeding edge of Android development.
