This is what MS hopes and I’m sure its part of their game plan but everyone I show W8 to, no one seems to like it and will not be upgrading and don’t want anything to do with the phones. They will still sell W7 for a few more months especially online.

If I was set on a particular phone, price cutting of another OS would not deter me from me from buying it. I would just fork out the extra cash and if I don’t have the cash I would wait and save. Sorry MS, I really don’t like your Lego phones / Metro or whatever you are calling it now.

Good on you. I hope there is more people like you. Duopoly’s are never good for the public (competition wise) and we definitely need a third option when it comes to phones and tablets.

I wonder if it is regional or age issue, I never seen in school or at work a Windows phone.

All I see are iPhones, Androids, some blackberry’s and flip-up phones

I have an iPhone 4 and over $150 of Apps and I am upgrading to a Windows 8X phone.
My demographic are early adopters and content creators or simply like new tech. And Apple’s arrogant dumping of Google maps for an inferior Mapping App in iOS6, the move to a closed dongle ecosystem, still a desperate need for a rubber case, make my jump to a new sophisticated W8X phone much easier.

W8X is the most exciting entry into the Smartphone market since the first iPhone.

I do not think I’ll be the only Apple customer to switch. Nokia has provided an App to help the process for OSX. We are planning to dump our iPads for a Pro version of MS Surface and will also switch our rendering workstations, to Windows 8 for desktops. The W8 preview has been amazing…we will also keep our aging MacPros but Apple Inc products are increasingly for diversion and not work. Mountain Lion is horrible.

MS will slowly gain customers at least for Windows 8X phones and tablets.

True. I was actually hoping that windows tablets were going to make a splash, especially considering Android hasn’t got a firm foothold yet, but then I found out that they aren’t going to out price the competition and only price them like the other high end tablets out there. I think this is a huge mistake and it will cost them dearly. Most people choose by price and then features. Apple has top end tablets tied up and I don’t think that’s going to change real soon. I know Microsoft doesn’t want to stand on the toes of the other makers that put out windows tablets, but they haven’t done the windows platform any favours. They are mostly second rate and over priced. Microsoft should subsidize their tablets strongly until they get some strong market share. They can afford to do so. Get the people in and then start charging

While I agree that similarities between a phone’s OS and that of someone’s desktop PC isn’t really an important factor, saying that Windows phones have been around for ages isn’t exactly true. Windows CE/Mobile and Windows Phone 7/8 are completely different things.

I too hope they do well, and yea, it’s definitely going to be an uphill battle for them. I had an iPhone, now have an Android, and while I’m leaning towards another Android when my current contract is up, I’m definitely interested to check out a WP8 phone before making a decision. For me, a smartphone is basically a phone that can do some other things. Exactly how it does those things isn’t really that important, so I’m not too concerned about giving a new platform a try for the next 2 years.

iOS is too limiting with Apple’s tight control, so that’s out. Android can do (or be hacked to do) everything under the sun, but it can be a bit rough around the edges and the issue of updates is pretty much a disaster. I’m very interested to see where Microsoft falls in that spectrum with WP8. If they can find a happy medium in some of these respects, Microsoft/WP8 could provide a compelling platform.

Windows Phones haven’t been around for ages, its barely a few years old. You’re confusing it with Windows Mobile – different software for a different set of phones.

Windows phones have been around for ages, just because your phone is like your computer isn’t going to mean much. In fact tablets are taking over computers because a lot of people find them frustrating and tablets are so intuitive. I do hope they do well but I can’t see it. If windows phones and tablets were to become incredibly powerful and cheap, I think that might sway people to change but just because your phone or tablet runs the same system, I don’t think so.

Have you seen the Windows PC market share by chance? It will be a natural switch to Windows Phone 8 once retailers start forcing everyone onto Windows 8 when they purchase their next PC (post-October). I think the Windows 8 ecosystem will be exciting a massive number of people in the near future.

While i wish them luck and i appreciate all and any competition in the mobile market, a windows phone does not seem to excite many people, no matter how good it is. I think the main problem is that people in general, are comfortable with Android and Apple, and therefore most would be unwilling to take a chance and swap over to windows. People are generally lazy, so they don’t wish to learn a different system and stay with what they know. Again, i wish windows well and hope they gain enough sales to keep them viable in the future.

Why is pricing important anyway? We already know ballpark figures when compared to other devices. Always in the range of $650-750.

It still is WP8, so if they want it to sell they will need to lower the prices a lot more than that…
