I've since used the HTC 7 Pro, my brother got one, and the keyboard is better than I expected from review. Though the Touch Pro II still had a better keyboard. What I think it really comes down to is profit margins. HTC probably didn't anticipate a WP7 device selling as well as the TP2 did as Android has become a very competitive force in smartphones. Also they probably knew not every US carrier was going to pick up the device. So my guess is that they worked on making the 7 Pro cheaper to make so they could up the per device profit margin.

Hopefully they realize their mistake and release a slider with the features and quality that make it a true successor to the TP2. Better yet would be if they released a Windows Phone version and an Android version.

You're absolutely right about the addition of a capactive screen and OS being all that was holding the Touch Pro 2 back from being an absolute beast of a phone. I go back a long way with hard keyboard/slide out/clam shell phones - the Psion 5mx, Sony Clie, HTC Universal, HTC TyTn II, etc, I've tried 'em all, and the Touch Pro II was, to use an evolutionary analogy, almost human. Why, then, couldn't HTC simply keep all of the good things about the Touch Pro II and build on them? Either they really don't give a shit about customers or... Nope, can't think of another reason.

I've been eagerly awaiting this phone. I loved the hardware of the Touch Pro 2 but hated the hit and miss covering of Windows Mobile 6. I've long said replacing the OS and moving to a capacitive screen was all that needed to make it the best phone on the market.

I have to say I'm rather disappointed with the HTC 7 Pro now that it's here. The Touch Pro 2's high quality speaker phone and innovative features associated with it are greatly missed here. Simply placing the phone face down during a call to activate the high quality speaker phone and then having a mute button on the back for such situation were very nice additions that added a lot of value to the Touch Pro 2.

HTC seems to no longer care about creating the best phone possible. It's as if now that they've earned a name for high quality devices they feel they can make dozens of barely different phones and rely on their name. They seem to feel Sense UI is the only differentiation they really need. Problem is they can't do that here in the Windows Phone 7 world and they've really missed an opportunity to create a phone that truly stands out from the rest.

Was even thinking of breaking contract to get this on Sprint next month. I think I'll just stick with my Nexus One for a while.

Dude, don't get me started on the Iphone 4...
Let me just say this...if you have been used to "garbage", then yeah, the focus may seem like a new advacement for you.
This phone is due for release later on this year and is using hardware that's already over a year old. My main point is that the phone could have been made so much better. Did you notice that there hasn't even been announcements of the phone being 4G capable? If every company has rolled over to 4G, why keep making 3G phones?
Imagine my wife has the mytouch 4g from t-mobile that came out nov 2010 (which will be about 8 months to 1 year from when this phone comes out) and it has better hardware than this phone does.
Technology is supposed to move forward. Any of the great smartphones due this year will have better specs than this will. The touchpro was a revolutionary phone that always had impressive qualities, but this year they've gone downhill...

I have had the HTC Touch Pro 2 for over a year and it have been dropped on Numerous Occasions with chips off casing and scratches to confirm the battles vs. ground. The Hinge still works just fine. I use it all day everyday. Whenever I type it is Always with the Keyboard. I hate the on screen keypad and Never use it. If the hinge is the same as the one in the TP2 you guys will be fine. I can't wait to get my hands on the HTC 7 Pro.

Granted I'm rooting for the E7 having just bought one, but still I'm a bit disappointed to hear this about the hinge. I kinda liked the look of the clever minimalistic hinge on this HTC. I haven't seen this unit live, but judging by the photos above it does seem like the hinge could also loosen over time. At the risk of sounding like a fanboy I have to say that the hinge mechanism on the E7 while not as minimalistic is rock solid and has a proper locking action which should go a long way to protecting against such problems.

BTW Nokia has done itself real disservice with the non-working samples of the E7 that some stores have to demonstrate the device before actually getting real devices in stock. The hinge mechanism on the dummy device is NOTHING like the real thing - it looks the same, but is horrible in action (you have to rip the screen open). Same goes for the dead rubbery keyboard on the dummy device. Having a prop like that to try and sell your device is just mad. But luckily the real thing is quite different :)

I have had a hands on with this phone, a colleague got one from Clove on launch day. Hinge mech is pretty weak and feels like it's going to break soon. Main appeal is xbox live integration but that's wp7 standard fare. The phone is really a bit meh, pretty fat too.

If the phone will be as reviewed here, it will suck. C'mon HTC! You already have all the hardware to make this phone kick-ass! I was really hoping for the next general pro to be way better than pro2. Even though my pro2 is fairly outdated, I rather stick with it than waste money on such a low quality update.
Graphics suck...
Camera sucks...
No front facing cam...
No SD Card storage...
Processor sucks for 2011 competition...
ROM Horrible!...
RAM Very Poor...

The only good upgrades are the jack audio and the 1500mah battery...but is that really enough for me to change???? Heck no!!
I'm getting tired of waiting for HTC to come out with a nice WP7 smartphone. If I don't see any changes in specs, I believe I will be moving to Android...

Well, the keyboard looks much much better than on the Desire Z, the hinge mechanism looks appealing and overall the design is a pretty decent "poor man's" version of the Nokia E7. But all the current WP shortcomings, a subpar display, only 8GB (and still no SD), no USB on the Go, no HDMI, a lackluster camera (worse than on the E7?), landscape mode not fully supported (!)...Somehow I think I'd be happier using the dying E7.

I'm starting to think, maybe foolishly, that the E7 might yet prove to be a viable option for the next year or two...
