LIke someone else said, HP doesn't have guts or the sense to just "put the sick dog down" so they are going to "free" the poor thing in middle of Death Valley.

There's no way in heck that WebOS will magically have an exciting future in 2013 if HP isn't busting its chops to make it have an exciting future now.

I get buying a tablet for 99 just to surf and such. But don't expect to get any tech support or future updates from HP. As for Android petent issues Samsung has won there major issues with regards to tablets in Australia and US, so that looks to be settled pretty much. As for ICS on the Sam Galaxy Nexus , Samsung has said that it has been designed to be patent proof against the Apple suits, in other words they made changes to the design so the suites are not an issue.

HP will return to webOS in 2013 only if webOS is thriving. In its form right now, it is a good os but needs speed optimization and wider support by developers and be recognized by consumers. Probably all sales of webos failed because no one company is confident they can succeed with webOS. HP spend 3+ billion on webos (mostly with poor decisions and marketing) and failed. If webOS is free and there isn't an established company selling webos products (HP has pulled out for now), some more risk-taking manufacturer could try develop a tablet or phone (less likely phones given cost and need or carrier relationships in the us at least). While consumers putting webOS on other devices can keep some webos devices around, that's not going to keep webos alive for long. A real hardware manufacturer will have to step up. Hardcore webos fans can keep their current devices afloat for a while with the very organized homebrew developers like webOS internals. I can keep my touchpad going for a while this way and already have the critical apps I wanted. This was a good choice for HP which couldn't invest more billions into webOS but didn't want to kill it completely. This opensource decision is uncertain but has a chance of success and will not cost HP too much. If I had to guess who will step up to the webOS plate, it will be ambitious manufacturer who wants to be next HTC or a current Android player who is not doing well compared to HTC, samsung, motorola.

I haven't purchased an HP product since they dumped the webOS and the Palm Pre smartphone effort. Nor, do I have any intention to buy from HP in the future until Meg and this arrogant crew commit to something other than the strategy of the day. What next; dump printers, scanners, and every other device they made for the consumer market. I have enough other choices now so that I don't have to worry about being abandoned by whim . Very disappointed - this could have been a great company rivaling Apple. Do I see another Wang in the making?

I'd suggest taking the time to read over your posts to make sure that they communicate clearly before submitting them. One of the reasons that Apple is successful, to use your example, is that they spend a lot of effort in getting the details right. And while I'm not a huge stickler for grammar - I certainly don't claim to be a perfect writer - but turn_self_off's post was so unclear that reading it twice I wasn't sure what he was trying to say.

I understand it is important to speak and write good English in America and this is why I am trying to do it. However, I disagree with you in here, by logging in and making comments, we are here to share our opinions and learn from each others. This is what America is about. We don't need Shakespeare to make comments here because I don't think too many of us would understand. Why do you think Apple is so successful in iphone and ipad? It's because any John Smith could you it. Language change as the world change. Before google, no one will know what "googling " means if you put it on paper.
I would. I did buy one for $99 for someone else, and would have gotten another if I didn't already own an iPad. I can't speak to Android ICS or beyond, but i just like the webOS ui more than iOS.
Like other posters have mentioned, Android has significant patent issues that don't look to be going away. Add to the equation that ENYO apps for webOS could possibly be run in a future version of Android, and you have a potentially viable alternative.

well my android tab and phone both have no buttons its all touch based, as for commercial success Android now leads in market share in the US and Internationally. And as far as having many choces, well people go to what is good, look at Windows phones for example. They have been out for a year and no one is byuing them, why because to OS is garbage. Simply put People will buy what is Great, and looking at numbers Android has proven that it has taken over the mobile market and soon it will control the Tab market too.

By selling the Touchpads dirt cheap HP made sure that a lot of developers would have it in their hands, and now by opening WebOS they have full acess to play with the Operating System and develop it to their heart desire. It seems that WebOS is not yet ready for primeTime and HP knows that. THey also know that to make it ready for primetime the closed source way would cost them Billion$$$. So by open sourcing the code they will get all the development they need, and more, almost free.

But now WebOS is no longer an abstract Operating System being developed. It is the operating System that the hundred of thousands of users of the Touchpads are using and tweaking daily. So the interaction between developers and end users, the synergy would be much better. Within a years it should be ready for primetime. And then, a new piece of hardware, with higher specifications will be release....

nice strategy, it turns out to be...

I would. I don't think any one platform rules. Each does well-some just have found commercial success. The commercial success does not mean the tablet or its OS 'rules.' WebOS has features that make it unique and worthy of use. Even the Blackberry Playbook uses their swipe up feature to dismiss open apps. The Playbook doesn't even need a single button to be used-everything is accomplished using swipe gestures. Just imagine Android and/or iOS adopting some of these user-friendly features. Without the different tablets on the market, there is less incentive for the commercial successes to innovate...

HP went beyond "dropping the ball" with WebOS. If they just offer a dual boot tablet and keep WebOS up to date, it can eventually become the darling of the Android tablet/phone makers. After all, all those people are cutting deals with Microsoft not to be sued. Here is a up to spec OS that can be freely adapted and works better than Android. Forget the "apps" numbers game. All a phone or tablet needs is the basics and the developers will come.

This depends on the OS being picked up by enthusiasts and such. Given that some provided optimization patches before HP did, indicates that there are independent interests out there that can keep WebOS up to speed if allowed to.

Vertical integration. Not having to rely on, or pay fees to a outside entity for the software powering your products. Also, as Apple have proven so strongly as of late, it makes persons and companies less likely to jump to another supplier.

basically why Microsoft pulled XP from the brink of oblivion, when ASUS made a big splash with Linux running netbooks. And Gates himself have said in the past that we would rather see people use a unlicensed copy of Windows, then opt for an alternative and so learn what else is out there. This because having people raised on Windows products makes such a easier sell to companies that is likely to hire them at a later date.

Also why all these companies and carriers are putting all kinds of crap on phones in the hopes that people will learn to expect their "services" and so make said people less likely to go to a competition.

Another term for it would be product differentiation, making a product stand out from the crowd of me to products.

Crazy thing is that i suspect a lot of people elsewhere in the world was waiting with anticipation for the WebOS products, but HP pulled out based on the response from a single (USA).

Right, in a crapy economy and with dwindling PC sales, this will never happen for HP. It was going to die, to even consider its return by 2013 is just foolish. The OS will be severely behind other operating systems that have been continually developed in the next 2 years. In order to even make headway into the current market you have to either have a giant presence to begin with (Microsoft), and open-source code with unlimited flexibility (Android) or a OS thats easy to use, is already largely adopted, and has been marketed as magical (Apple). Where does WebOS fit within this ecosystem...it doesn't.

In 2010, HP said Web OS is the only operation system which can compete with iOS. However, looking at the promising future of iOS, I still believe that Web OS can stand up to challenge apple. I like the simple UI and creative app closing gesture when I was first using the Palm pre. I don't think going open-sourced can win its future. only be paid more attention and invested more money that allows a perfect team to develop a solid support to the system. it all depends on the money and talents from HP.
