Why is everyone ignoring the 1000 lbs gorilla in the closet? Google is a little too powerful, don't you think? And do you think MS or Apple is going to slow them down? No, they won't. Google needs competition in the truly open-source arena ... and they've had none, but WebOS stands to be a real competitor but it seems those who are most likely to know better about this fact are already singling WebOS'es demise instead of offering encouragement to HP and would-be developers. You guys are shooting yourselves in the foot, and that will be ridiculously apparent when Google sucks the living life out of you. Monopolies always do.

Well I can see Amazon wanting to buy it as an OS for their Kindle tablets in the future, to prevent being stabbed in the back by google one day, and allows better leverage for customization to finally destroy the Ipad from a single seller. $500 mil is too much though. Probably be around $300 mil; some synergy can be created for HP printers tied to remote Kindle printing though.

Hey HP its not going to happen for that price. Your last CEO /whatever, screw you guys when he decided to discontinue development of all webOS devices.

WebOS is best turned into open source at this point, theres no point of investing in that OS.
Palm would be good for some companies. I could see a palm device running android or wp7.

A fiasco it was indeed. HP is much better off keeping Palm's WebOS, particularly now that it has officially designated it as Open Source, the foundation for future profit margins is already there given the sophistication and ease of use of WebOS. Where Palm failed to capitalize on a jewel of an OS, HP can and should do the opposite in order to make it succeed; an improved economic outlook would definitely help, but that will only happen when the Democrats' control of the White House and the US Senate is reversed, otherwise we'd be facing a much worse forecast than what Japan experienced during the "lost decade" of the 1990s.
