The TouchPad had a lot of problems, including it's chunky hardware, poor marketing, and too-high price, but chief among them would probably be it's bush league OS. I guess HP thought it was that simple just to strike it rich like Apple. But WebOS was just trapped in a vicious cycle. Few apps meant few consumers would choose it over it's competitors, few consumers choosing it meant less developer interest (again, thanks to much more attractive platforms from competitors), and less developer interest meant less apps, which goes back to the lack of consumers. The best thing HP could have done was dump WebOS, and now they've done that with Gram.
While the TouchPad was a disaster, HP realizes that there is still money to be made in the tablet market. While the TouchPad was unimpressive hardware-wise, that wasn't it's biggest problem. Supporting Windows 8/RT instead of WebOS gives them an advantage on the software front, as opposed to a liability. With an OS as huge as Windows 8 is going to be, all they have to do is price whatever tablet they build reasonably, and they can at least make a buck. Though I'm sure HP could still screw it up, since they're HP. No matter what kind of tablet they make, I doubt it will fly off the shelves, just because HP tends to have a lot of missteps with major products.
