The HP Envy 17 series Laptop is a high-end desktop replacement Laptop starting at $1,299.99 on the HP Store. The acknowledgment of the news goes to "http://www.i4u.com/40954/hp-envy-17-review". The news made me aware of the fact that the HP Envy 17 features DDR5 VRAM plus Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPUs, all housed in a stunning, laser-etched aluminum body. And this is our only consumer laptop that supports up to three external displays. The Envy 17 that landed, was configured with a 1.60GHz Intel Core i7 Q720 processor, 6GB of RAM, a 500GB 7,200rpm hard drive, and 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics. It's a powerhouse of a machine, and it can be built with even more muscle as it can be spec'd out with up to 8GB of RAM and faster Core i7-740QM or Core i7-840QM processors.
I'm actually posting this from the Asus G73J, and I'm here looking for a replacement to it. On paper, the specs are great, but it somehow manages to be one of the slowest machines I've ever used. I've had it for about 7 months, and it's had issues from day one. Go with the Envy. I'm never buying Asus again.

G73 does not lack in very important ports, only eSATA and mindisplay (never used in my life, and rarely see people using those). yes, it could be better if asus would provide an express card slot, but that is not present in envy either.
bad display? both have 17.3" FHD 3D display and hp is not using something like an IPS panel either. good luck with a frying pan (read reviews in hp site itself)!

you can always buy a USB TV tuner, but did not see one available for 3D. this machine is meant for local use for 3D since the HDMI out cannot do 3D output being 1.3c only. i decided to cancel this order and go for asus G73JW-3DE instead. hp looks nicer, but the asus machine is much more powerful for the price. the default processor 740QM is excellent enough, RAM is 8 GB, video card is much more powerful (nvidia 460M), both drives are hybrid (almost close to SSD in terms of performance, [(500 GB + 4 GB) x 2]). HDMI is 1.4, therefore, 3D output to a 3DTV is possible. asus also gives you BD writer. other than hp, almost very other 3D laptop maker including asus is going for nvidia 3D vision. and, this asus is much better in cooling process than what hp does. asus is FTW.

Some research done -No tuner, no hdmi in. Essentially all of your 3D content will have to come from download content, 3D discs, games and live stream.

What gets me is that they show on their demo 3d basketball. Where do they expect that to be available? Do the envy competitors offer a way to use a cable box or hdmi in? To me, this seems like a huge flaw.

I would love for someone to help me out here.

I am not too up to date with connectivity of similar machines. Since there is no tv tuner, does that mean there anyway to hook up a 3d cable box to this to play sports? Essentially, are there any inputs that would allow an input source of 3d content other than just the blu ray player built in? sorry if my wording is off.

haha, Jim, you are expecting too much from apple. how did you expect 3D from apple when they are still not willing to give you blu-ray and HDMI after so many years?

@Thenicknology
some other brands already did it, say, asus, toshiba and lenovo. search amazon by keyword "3d laptop". the difference is that those companies are following nvidia 3D vision as opposed to AMD's HD 3D.
so far hp's 3D laptop has the largest screen and full HD screen though. but hp's has lower battery life.

i have ordered hp 17 3D. however, after seeing some reviews in some other sites including hp.com, it looks like some of these guys have problems of being shut down because of tremendous heat generation. did you see something like this?
i am not concerned about battery life at all as i will be using this guy as a mobile desktop for sure. but the shut down as a result of heat is definitely a concern.

Please I need a answer about the HDMI of the HP envy 3D.
I know that this laptop has hdmi 1.3c port.
I know that ordinary we need hdmi 1.4 to connect a laptop to a 3D Tv.
But i heard that maybe we can connect the hdmi 1.3c HP Envy to a 3D Tv (with 1080p) if we use a good 10.2 Gb/ high speed cable.

Did you try this point (could you do that?)
