We rely on our modern architects to live in obscure homes of their own creation; in fact it’s a terrible disappointment when you find out that a favoured designer has what seems like a hopelessly bland living environment compared to their esoteric designs. Well, it’s not an accusation that could be levelled at Adam Kalkin, who lives in a house-in-a-house in New Jersey.

Consisting of an industrial shed built in 2001 which surrounds an original two-story house, the greater space is furnished with items in keeping with the inner building as though they’re having a vast, ongoing yard sale. Seemingly splicing opinion (some think it ostentatiously cool, others lament the masking of a period house), whether you like it or not you certainly couldn’t accuse it of being boring!
